The comparisons to the Volkswagen Phaeton really need to stop. It’s an entirely different story.. VW was selling the Phaeton for the same price as an Audi A8. Why would you opt for the VW? One reason – exclusivity.. However, these cars are selling for $30k on eBay now..

The Genesis, on the other hand, is not NEARLY as expensive.. It’s actually a GREAT deal compared to what it competes with.. This is the other side of the fence compared to the Phaeton…

This is Hyundai’s start to higher end luxury. Maybe one day they will branch off a high end luxury brand. I don’t think Hyundai has been around long enough to start a luxury brand. They need to be completely mainstream before they can start an independent luxury name. In my opinion, Lincoln is not luxury at all. Unless you think that luxury is a dressed up, more expensive Ford with more standard power features and better dealership service. I used to work at a Ford/Lincoln dealership. The leather in the LS at the time was so cheap. I couldn’t even smell the leather when I sat in the car. My friends new 2003 Accord had nicer leather and smelt like… well… leather. I don’t know about USA, but in Canada Lincoln and Cadillac don’t even have their own seperate dealerships. Infinity, Lexus, and even Acura have separate dealerships in Canada. Anyone who purchases an “American luxury car” is someone who can’t afford a European luxury car. Or they are too patriotic and want to support an American company.

I can guarantee that the Hyundai will depreciate less than any crappy American “luxury” car. Also at least Hyundai built the genesis from the ground up to be a economic luxo car not like the Lincoln fusion lol or Lincoln edge

Having Kia-Hyundai is more like having Ford-Mercury or Chevy-Saturn. Here’s a breakout of the cost difference between Kia and Hyundai vehicles:
Rio: $11,540 – Accent: $10,970 (Kia’s $570 higher)
Spectra: $13,850 – Elantra: $13,870 (Hyundai’s $20 higher)
Optima: $14,730 – Sonata: $18,300 (Hyundai’s $570 higher)
Amanti: $26,220 – Azera: $24,770 (Kia’s $1450 higher)
Sportage: $16,725 – Tucson: $17,420 (Hyundai’s $695 higher)
Sorento: $21,695 – Santa Fe: $21,270 (Kia’s $425 higher)
Sedona: $21,420 – Entourage: $23,995 (Hyundai’s $2575 higher)

And while Hyundai’s pitching the Genesis as a value-priced luxury sedan, Kia’s pitching the Borrego as a value-priced luxury SUV.

So Hyundai prices its cars an average of $323.57 higher than it prices equivalent Kia models. Let’s look at Toyota v. Lexus’s equivalent models:

Toyota Camry: $18,920 – Lexus ES350 $34,120 (Lexus is $15,200 higher)
Toyota Highlander: $27,500 – Lexus RX350 FWD: $37,700 (Lexus is $10,200 higher)
Toyota 4Runner: $28,415 – Lexus GX470 $47,615 (Lexus is $19,200 higher)
Toyota Land Cruiser: $64,100 – Lexus LX570: $75,705 (Lexus is $11,605 higher)

So, as you can see, Hyundai is NOT Kia’s “luxury division”. Their brand DOESN’T have the cachet of a luxury brand, and the rest of their lineup (and indeed all of their sales) are much lower-line cars.

You didn’t see Lexus getting its start by selling a rebadged ‘89 Tercel, did you?

The coupe version is going to take off like a rocket with the tuner market. Finally we get a RWD turbo car again. All those guys who are fed up with FWD but don’t have the dough for a WRX or Evo will be lining up to take delivery. If the sticker for a base one can hit the right level I might line up too.

If they come out with the coupe that is 2.0l turbo RWD like they announced this spring it might do well. I do see alot of tibs out there and personally i think this would be a better platform.

As Volswagen found with the late-but-not-lamented Phaeton, A luxury car is one thing. But making your luxury customer go to a dealership where $17,000 product is being sold and serviced to BUY IT is quite another. The Genesis may well be a good car, but I for one would not cross the threshold of any of the Hyudai dealers I’ve ever seen to get one. This is the very reason the Japanese INVENTED the brands of Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus. They knew that no matter how good their cars were, few Americans would pay a large premium price for anything that said “Honda” or “Toyota” on it.

Um, Cadillac, Buick, Saab, Lincoln, Volvo… Those are some luxury divisions of GM and FoMoCo. Ford and Chevy are not their luxury brands. Hyundai has who? Hyundai. Even Toyota, Nissan and Honda have luxury brands (Lexus, Infinity and Acura). Hyundai still has only Hyundai. And the name is almost synonymous with “cheap”.

CP92804, I bet the rebadged Kia version of that thing is already in the works. As for rebadged Tauruses(Fusions u mean?) & Crown Vics, that’s faux luxury all right, but at least it those cars come with an actual luxury brand on it.
The Genesis is actually a rebirth the failed VW Phaeton plan gone horribly wrong.

I just saw my first one in person today. There is no way these will sell. That hideous chrome grille (with the conspicuous absence of the “H”) is as fake as the wannabe-Mercedes Sonata they used to make, and the body is the most generic slab of automobile I’ve ever seen, even worse than mid- and late-’90s Lexus sedans. A Crown Vic has more character than this car. The Sonata “Mercedes coming, Jaguar Going” didn’t fool anyone, and this one won’t either. How can a V8 have such high HP output and such low torque? Remember the Phaeton — VW can’t go upscale, people have a fixed idea in their mind as to what that car brand represents. Hyundai represents cheap, generic disposable cars, and a $36k sticker is going to leave them sitting on the lot.

So Hyundai plans to sell more Genesis coupes than sedans. That’d be backward from every other sales trend. Perhaps they’re figuring the coupe’s lower price will bring more people in.

However, are these figures for worldwide sales, or North America? Because there’s no way in hell Hyundai sells 50k Genesises in North America next year.

Thye’ll make that number if the Genesis is sold in the same way the rest of line is. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t see some carnival-barker of a sales manager on TV from the local Hyundai dealer offering huge discounts, 0% financing, low monthly payments, etc. etc.. The sticker price is just paper. The Genesis may sticker at $34K, but very few will pay nearly that for it. Residuals will probably be very low. They also seem to have more faith in the coupe than the sedan. Has the coupe been unvieled yet?

The car will sell well. It’s one of those cars for people who cant afford a BMW,MB,Lexus,Acura, but don’t want to settle for the faux luxury divisions of ford and GM.

That’s pretty ambitious for Hyundai’s first real step into the mainstream car world. I haven’t seen one of these cars in person yet… but they certainly sound promising enough on paper. If the price is right it just might be possible.
