Hyundai shuts the door on a Genesis convertible

01/06/2009, 1:20 PM

By Drew Johnson

Hyundai’s upcoming Genesis coupe is intended to rival Ford’s popular Mustang and serve as a low-cost alternative to cars like Infiniti’s G37 coupe, but the Korean automaker says it has no plans to offer an open air version of the Genesis two-door.

Rumors of a Genesis convertible have been circling for several months now, but Miles Johnson, manager of Hyundai’s public relations, says there is no drop top version of the coupe in the works. “The coupe wasn’t developed to be a convertible from the ground up,” Johnson told Edmunds. “It was developed as a global car. The wind in your hair doesn’t work in Korea, and there’s not enough volume in the U.S.”

Moreover, Johnson says Hyundai has no current plans to produce any convertible model.

With the Chevrolet Camaro convertible delayed at least a year and the Dodge Challenger not even offering a convertible option, it seems as though Hyundai is really missing out on the chance to truly take on the Ford Mustang. The convertible version of the Mustang doesn’t sell as well as its hard top counterpart, but it’s no slouch either. Add in the fact that the G37 coupe will soon be available with a retractable hard top and Hyundai might be missing out on a big opportunity.

Wow, Hyundai just let the chance of a lifetime slip through its fingers. I hate Hyundais, but the new Genesis and Genesis coupe have changed my opinion just a little bit. I’m sure a lot of people would’ve bought that convertible too. It’s a RWD convertible for under $30K…could’ve made Ford breathe a little harder too.

Well Im still not completely sold on the exterior styling and the interior could use some improvements but from what I have read it’s a world class car. If I were in the market for a 2 door sports coupe I would consider purchasing one. Its a huge step fwd for hyundai but I think they need to style their cars better and I hope the name isnt going to be “Genesis Coupe” 380GT sounds better

This is going to look so ugly in 10 years anyway… And it shoud be called G24t for the 4 banger turbo and G38GT for the 6er. They already knocked off the Infiniti M35/45, might as well start taking their names too.

All Hyundais should be convertibles. Makes it easier to turn them into planters after the warranty’s expired.

I’d rather take a Stang. They already had this car made out before they knew of the ‘10 Mustang. Ford had some time to get ahead of Hyundai.

yarddog82abn, you asked what care can you get for 50k and 500hp, well for 57k, you can get more then 500hp with the cts v for one. And This car doesnt need to be a conv , they didnt miss the boat, the market the way it is.. aint worth spending money to drop the top for a few customers.

This car does’nt even take on the base model Mustang very well. 0-60 is either 6.2 or 5.7 seconds.
Base model Mustang GT does 0-60 in 5.1 so this is not a Mustang Killer

I prefer the Genesis sedan
Muscle-car nuts will avoid the Genesis Coupe.
