To my way of thinking, when someone asks you what kind of car you drive, everybody who owns one of these cars says “sonata” and then reluctantly says “Hyundai” after.

Most responses are “oh”.

sharpie, have you driven Sonata and Accord within the same day to compare? I know it is subjective, but it helps to drive the point home. After all, you want something that drives well. If you find Sonata outperforming Accord, please let me know. I believe this is the main difference.

I’m not sure I understand the paragraph implying this is the second generation Sonata.. by my count, there have been 4 generations of the Sonata (1989-94, 1995-98, 1999-2005, and 2006-present) and this is a mid-cycle refresh of the 4th gen.

TomF, you wouldn’t have to worry much about resale if the Sonata is a keeper. Besides, you lose money everything you buy a brand new car and drive it off the lot. That goes for Honda as well. Then everytime you trade a car in, you lose more. I’m not in the business of re-selling car every three years and really see no reason to unless the car is not reliable. The Sonata’s reliability is not any worse then other mid-size sedans.

Why you wouldn’t buy it: crap resale value. The moment you drive a new one off the lot, you just lost a month’s pay. It only gets worse from there.

Nope, still doesn’t do it for me. The Accord offers two things the Sonata will never have: manual transmissions across the board and a coupe version. Next.

mayer_ray_nagin,you came to a very logical logical conclusion looking at the sticker of a car. I don’t know how Hyundai positioned in your neck of the woods, but everywhere were I seen their dealership in North East they were clearly aimed at recent emigrants, existing minorities and generally disadvantaged population with comprehension problems. Cars are marked up, spiced with pinstriping for $500-$1000 and other “niceties”. The main attraction: we provide financing for bad credit and no trade will be turned off. So when all is said and done and you compare the price for Accord (LX oe EX) and “dealer configured” Sonata the price difference seems less then precise. And don’t forget re-sale value.

Note to Mark Elias: At least for 2008 the new Accord is considered a large size vehicle by the EPA. Did the categories change in 09?

Xyunya, I think the Sonata still pegs in a couple grand below an Accord.

4 cylinder engine is 2 HP less potent then weakest of Accord 4 cylinder or 15 HP then strongest Accord 4 cylinder. 6 cylinder is only 29 HP short of Accord. If they cost the same, why would you buy Sonata? Love for a weakling?
Author did not mention that it drives better then Accord. Perhaps some soul searching occurred with this gen II , but previous Sonata (original one 2 years ago) was not even close to the older version of Accord, the one with 166 HP engine and stupid grin of the grille.
