Hyundai to fill ad void left by GM at Academy Awards, Super Bowl

10/09/2008, 11:05 AM

By Drew Johnson

General Motors had been an Oscar sponsor for more than a decade, but announced earlier this year that is was pulling out of the red carpet event in order to more wisely spend its advertising bucks. That left a $13 million void in the Oscar’s purse, but luckily the star-studded event has found a replacement sponsor.

Hyundai has announced that it will be picking up the slack left by GM and will be sponsoring this February’s Academy Awards. No word on how much the new deal will be worth, but GM dropped $13.5 million on the event last year, which included an exclusive automotive sponsorship.

Times must be a little easier in Korea than they are in Detroit right now as Hyundai also confirmed it will be running two 30-second spots during January’s Super Bowl — an event GM pulled out of in September.

Slumping car sales and an overall weak economy have forced many automakers to reduce their advertising spending, with ad spending taking an 18 percent dive in the second quarter of 2008, according to Automotive News.

Top three shows where you’re likely to see a General Motors ad:

1) Til Death
2) Six Feet Under
3) Lost

* 90210 was also considered as it coincides with the year GM is forecast to return to profitability.

Johnny, it is a good comment in a bad time: market lost another 6%. You can buy GM below $5/share. 90210 may not come soon enough (ford is at $2/share). Another day like that and Ford will be delisted

The Genesis Super Bowl adds have had little or no effect, as the Genesis hasn’t exactly lit the market on fire.
They’re working hard just to get on pace for 15k in it’s first year.
Patience is a virtue they can’t comprehend

RTT10: Then you’re certainly not in the market for a large sedan or can’t afford such a vehicle like a Genesis without loans, otherwise you’d know better.

I’ve been to Soul Korea. They love Hyundais and Hondas in that order. They don’t love low tier quality Korean/American cars. I SAID BAH HUMBUG SO I LEFT KOREA!
