Hyundai to introduce Genesis coupe during Super Bowl XLIII

12/30/2008, 11:07 AM

By Drew Johnson

Hyundai’s Genesis sedan has been just the shot in the arm the Korean automaker needed, but an even stronger lineup is just around the corner, thanks to the upcoming Genesis coupe. Auto show goers have already had a chance to lay their eyes on the sleek two-door, but Hyundai will introduce the Genesis coupe to the rest of the nation during the Super Bowl on February 1st.

The Super Bowl has a long standing tradition of offering viewers the best in commercial entertainment, and it doesn’t sound like Hyundai will disappoint. Using the theme “The Epic Lap”, Hyundai intends to show the serious performance potential of the Genesis coupe.

So how is Hyundai going to do that? We’re not 100 percent sure, but we do know it involves Formula-D champion Rhys Millen, a closed race track, the music of Yo-Yo Ma and enough crazy driving to require a tire change during filming.

“The Epic Lap” will be broken into two 30-second commercials, so we imagine one spot will feature the 220 horsepower version of the Genesis coupe while the other will highlight the 306 horsepower version. Even if you don’t like football, it sounds like it will be worth it to check out the big game for Hyundai’s spots alone.

This looks great, will never be in Honda/Acura territory but the D3 should start to worry. KBB is the best internet tool around, other then transgender porn.

This car is set to revolutionize the tuner market. Turbo power, RWD, and low price. Should be stiff competition for everything from the MazdaSpeed 3 to the 370Z.

Maybe… just maybe… manufacturers like Honda and Mazda will answer back with their own RWD turbo coupes within the next 2-4 years.

I like the idea of a 2.0L turbo with rear-wheel drive… Someone should have done this years ago. Oh yeah they did- but only in Japan (Nissan Silvia.) This car should be an absolute blast to drive. I hope it’s under $25k…

Tripleoneflipper you crack me up!
People take things way too seriously in an environment where most anything goes and things don’t really matter one way or the other.

Too bad the Pewter pirates won’t be involved.
I say the Steelers will beat the giants, 17-13.

I’m less interested in the genesis Coupe than the sedan.
