It’s starting to seem like a checklist: One automaker after the next is cutting production in response to slow sales due to the global economic slowdown. Hyundai is the next automaker we can “check off” on that list because the Korean automaker is slowing production by idling its Montgomery, Alabama, plant, for 11 days spread out through the rest of the year.
That unexpected “vacation” for factory workers was spread out to minimize the financial impact on workers, a Hyundai spokesperson said.
Sales of the Sonata sedan are down 1.9 percent this year – despite a 2009 refresh – and sales of the Santa Fe are down 15 percent, reflecting the trend away from SUVs.
