Hyundai to unveil Veloster concept-inspired Tiburon replacement at ‘09 Frankfurt show

08/11/2008, 4:24 PM

By Drew Johnson

As previously reported, the Hyundai Tiburon will go to the sharks after 2008, but a new report suggests that Hyundai won’t be without a front-wheel drive sports coupe for long. Hyundai will unveil a new model at next-year’s Frankfurt Motor Show that will take the place of the aging Tiburon.

It remains unclear what nameplate the new coupe will wear, but the Tiburon replacement will be heavily inspired by the Veloster concept, according to 4Car.

The new coupe will ride on the Hyundai i30’s platform and should be comparable in size to the last generation Toyota Celica. That places the new car slightly below the upcoming Kia Coupe and Genesis Coupe in overall size.

Hyundai has yet to reveal what powertrains will be offered in the new coupe, but an efficient four-cylinder will undoubtedly be part of the equation.

The new coupe should hit the market shortly after its September 2009 unveiling.

Yay… a small new car with a (hopefully) turbo 4. Make the base model some anemic POS engine that gets good mileage… and a GT model with the same setup as the base Genesis Coupe. Price it at around 18k and let it ride!

People in a coma would probably agree that was one of the most hideous concepts ever.

I feel that Hyundai has really lifted their game in recent times. Aesthetics aside, at least they are coming up with original concepts and designs!

This is a smart move on Hyundai’s part cuz the Kia Koup is larger than the Veloster but smaller than the Genesis Coupe so they’re giving themselves variety unlike GM is doing with cloning all their cars & rebadging them with new grills.

I also agree they should give it a 4 cyl from the Accent or something to give it a “gas friendly coupe” image (there really AREN’T any on the market yet in this genre) and give it a GT model with a turbo-4… done.

This is confusing.. Some people say the Tiburon is finished – some say it’s not.. Does anyone know for sure whether or not this FWD coupe is really due for a redesign?

Thanks,
