With auto safety at an all-time best, it seems like just about every week another vehicle (or more) is added to the growing list of automobiles deemed worthy of top honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The latest to receive the IIHS' highest award is the 2013 Lexus GS sedan, which improved upon its predecessor's scores and brought home a 2012 Top Safety Pick award after earning the highest possible rating of "good" in each category.

The 2012 GS performed particularly well in the IIHS' new roof strength test, which measures the amount of force applied to a vehicle's roof before it reaches a certain amount of crush. While the outgoing GS failed to earn a top rating in the roof strength category, its replacement aced the test by withstanding 4.88 times its curb weight.

The 2013 Lexus GS is the third Lexus model to pass the newest lineup of tests with top scores in each category and earn a Top Safety Pick award.
