Following California’s lead, the cash-strapped state of Illinois has announced it is looking into the feasibility of selling corporate ads on state license plates. California announced it was investigating a similar measure to raise state funds last year.

Illinois is currently facing a $13 billion state deficit, forcing the 21st state to join the union to consider all options for turning a quick buck. Selling ads on license plates could prove to the lowest hanging fruit, providing a way for the state to raise funds without increasing taxes.

The bill, officially known as SB1360, has yet to receive final approval, but state legislators have already given secretary of state Jesse White the green light to launch a study into the matter. The study is scheduled to conclude next January.

If approved, the bill would allow businesses to put their logos on Illinois state license plates. Illinois drivers would still have a say on what goes on their car, though, as the corporate plates would be optional. Drivers that opted for the sponsored plates would receive a price discount.
