Illustrated: 2012 Mercedes-Benz BLK-Class

Generally speaking, Germany’s three largest automakers do their best to match eachother segment-for-segment. When it comes to compact crossovers, it appears Mercedes, Audi, and BMW will carry on that tradition. With the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 on the way, rumors are circulating about a comptitor from Mercedes-Benz, tentatively named BLK.

So far, the BMW X1 is the only such model actually unveiled to the public, but our recent illustrations of the Audi Q3 shouldn’t be far off the mark. With rumors heating up in the European press about a BLK-Class, we thought it timely to turn our focus to the Mercedes soft-roader.

The next-generation B-Class will form the basis for the BLK, providing an all-wheel-drive chassis and engines ranging in size from 1.6 to 2.2 liters. Larger than its predecessor, the new B-Class will be offered with a choice of all- or front-wheel-drive. It’s not known if BLK buyers will have the same choice, or if they’ll have to settle for AWD.

In terms of styling, the BLK will borrow its boxy look from the larger GLK-Class in an attempt to give the small vehicle a distinct truck-like appearance. Our illustration, seen below, offers a speculative estimation of the BLK’s exterior.

Odds are they won’t stick with calling it ‘BLK.’ Sounds like “Black’ class.

Not nearly as nice as the new GMC Terrain or new SRX. Lower quality and miserable German reliability

I doubt this would ever see the light of day. They couldn’t price it far enough below the GLK to have it make sense to anyone. IF they get rid of the ML-class and move the GLK up slightly, then maybe, but I really don’t see MB having 4 SUV’s.

Oh great, another over priced, unreliable, public fooling and embarrassing to be in Mercedes SUV. Softroader? You mean Silkroader? I’m guessing that if the road isn’t newly paved and soft enough it won’t be able to handle the roughness and the minor stresses it will have on its super sensitive over tech suspension.

Isn’t GLK just enough of an addition right now? Mercedes is large enough. Kill it now, please. Spend your money on something that will lift the brand, not widen it.

I agree completely with both pavlindrom and yukonee… WHERE IS THE NEED FOR ANOTHER SUV? ESPECIALLY IF ITS NOT MADE TO DO ANYTHING SPORT OR UTILITY?

If yuppies will buy it, mercedes will sell it. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

DVsutton, you’re not fooling anybody with that new name. Can’t LLN ban your IP address all together?

LLN only ban’s who they’re afraid of. Which is why I got banned, they couldn’t handle truth. Jack Nicholson would have kicked the LLN blog cops @$$’s, $H!T on them, then made them eat it.
