Japanese automakers bounced back last month, leaving many rivals in the dust.

The nation's best-selling new car was the Toyota Camry, which slipped ahead of the Chevrolet Silverado. As usual, the Ford F-Series pickup line took home first place overall with its commanding lead over the Camry. Aside from the Silverado and the Ram, General Motors and Chrysler were not represented on the top 10 list at all.

Interestingly, a number of high-profile recalls didn't keep the Ford Escape from slipping ahead of the Honda CR-V to become the country's best-selling SUV/crossover last month.

Barely missing out on the top 10 were the Hyundai Sonata (20,978), Honda CR-V (20,554), Chevrolet Equinox (19,906), Hyundai Elantra (18,512) and all of the Toyota Prius-badged vehicles (16,643). The best-selling European car was the Volkswagen Jetta, with 13,629 sedans and wagons sold.
