Tata Motors, India’s largest vehicle manufacturer, says it plans to launch an inexpensive small car by 2008 that is being slated to sell for just over $2,000. That price would undercut the cheapest cars now being produced in China and Russia. Tata had been exporting its small cars to the U.K., where they were sold by now defunct British automaker MG Rover as the City Rover, priced from just under $10,000. Tata has not publicly disclosed its export plans, but Chinese manufacturers Chery and Geely, whose cars start at around $4,000, have said they are planning to come to North America .
