Saab’s new manager hears from skeptical fans, Mulally announces he believes in global warming, and the UAW is cutting back benefits to members as times get tougher.

Shannon’s appointment generates skepticism
Steve Shannon is experiencing the closet thing to an Apple experience that one can have today in the automotive industry. His appointment to run SAAB has generated an outpouring of concern for the brand from Saab-ophiles, the Detroit News reported this morning. As blogger Steve Wade put it, “This ain’t Buick, kid.”

Mulally: Global Warming is real
Ford CEO Alan Mulally, showing the same penchant for green issues as his boss Bill Ford, said today that global warming is real and is in part caused by auto emissions. The Detroit News reported today that Mulally has created a new post at Ford to help coordinate efforts by the automaker to reduce the company’s environmental impact.

UAW Cuts Member Benefits
The Detroit News reports today massive membership losses and production cuts over the past 20 years have forced many UAW locals to cut members benefits in order to keep local benefit funds solvent. Programs that have been cut include job retraining, extended education and union scholarships for employees spouses and children.

Bill Ford is not a scientist nor accredited in any of the environmental sciences…He is just an enthusiastic CEO with a 8th Grade education with an abiding love for all of God’s Earth. “Hi everybody, I’m Bill Ford!”

Maximus – learn to do some research: “Mulally graduated from the University of Kansas in 1969 with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering. He also received a Master’s degree in Management (S.M.) as a Sloan Fellow from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1982.” …and Bill Ford’s education is also quite comparable.

Whether either one of them truly believes in Global Warming or uses the issue to get some Prius/Insight/”Green vehicle” customers back – that’s a different story. Global Warming has been raised into a major political / policy issue and as such everyone (lawmakers, car-makers, etc.) will use “research results” by spinning the issue one way or the other.

THEY ARE SHUTING DOWN ASSEMBLY PLANTS.

His next step is to declare bankruptcy and cease production totally and save the world.

(China doesn’t care, they have a Kyoto exemption and can pollute as much as THEY want)

I haven’t seen any studies, but my personal observation would be that the higher the education level a person has the more likely they are to conclude that evidence points to man made global warming.

Here at LLN, using a poster’s writing skills as an off the cuff measurement of education level along with their opinion on the possibility of man made global warm only reinforces my belief in this observation.

maximus & PrimeGTP – Points well taken here. Sheryl Crow has developed her own solution to global warming. We should all limit ourselves to one square of toilet paper every time we have to hit the can. Oh, and maybe you can have three sheets for those heavy traffic days. Yesterday Rosie O’Donnell responded to to Sheryl’s absurd suggestion with just five words: “Have you seen my ass?”
I think I might actually be starting to like her.
.
Seriously, who cares if Mulally or Ford believe global warming is real. It’s a hot button political issue, and if these guys were to be honest and admit that man’s role is minimal (assuming he has one to play in the first place) the uproar of feigned anger and political posturing would be astonishingly stupid beyond measure. Even saying “I don’t know one way or the other; there’s a good case on both sides,” wouldn’t remotely cut it either. No one’s likely to boycott Ford Motor Company for trying to make their products more eco-friendly, but you can bet the ensuing firestorm to follow in the wake of “denial” would be patently vicious and unforgiving. In a time when people are still nailing Ford to wall over the Firestone debacle, now is hardly the time to be rocking the boats of political correctness when Ford has enough trouble getting positive messages out to the public. The company just doesn’t need any more bad press than it has already. I know some people would rather the company not take a position in the first place, but with Ford being a “one step forward, two steps back” kind of company over the last couple of years, I can’t say this is that bad a move. If Alan Mulally honestly believes in global warming then what’s the harm in reduced emissions and/or better gas mileage, or reduced effect on the environment with respect to automobile production? So long as it can be done without compromising safety or quality, I’m all for it.

deantj, I sure hope you are right about global warming. Judging from the shrinking polar ice cap and snow cap on top of the Sierra Nevada, you are on the losing side. Global warming has been an issue on the international stage since the 1990s and surely lasted more than 2 years. In the past a coalition of companies including BP Oil, Dupond, GE, Duke Energy, Florida Energy, PG&E urged the Federal government to set cap on CO2 emission. But I suppose you know all that since you have done such a good job on your Master thesis and must be so much better than all the scientists at these oil and energy companies.

Random jerk, it’s nice to see that you have a personal observation about people with higher education and man made global warming without seeing any studies. At least you are honest and up front about your knowledge or the lack of it.

Get Real, sure China (and India too) did not sign onto Kyoto Protocol, and neither has the US. So what’s your point? We are not talking about Kyoto Protocol here. You must be so proud of the US for being able to pollute more than China, quite an achievement indeed!

Mulally isn’t any expert, but let him have his opinion. If he wants to push Ford into producing cleaner car, what’s wrong with that? If anything, his opinion helps Ford’s corporate image that the company is committed to protecting the environment.

Hay deantj, It is easy to tell the level of education by the superb mastery of the English language. Global Warming is an undisputed fact, the only question is what is causing it. I read one article from an anti-global warming muck raker who claimed that the Artic was getting colder. Uh, no that would be wrong. Every case I have read where someone is making a claim that Global warming is not real has had false statements in it. The argument against the facts is merely the Wrong Wing propaganda machine. Go back to school; you apparently did not learn how to do research.
