2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible priced from $43,850

06/04/2009, 6:07 PM

By Drew Johnson

Infiniti fully unveiled its 2009 G37 Convertible nearly seven months ago at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but has just now released pricing for the drop top. The G37 Convertible — with automatic transmission — will list from $43,850. Those wanting to swap their own gears will have to fork up another $50 for a manual transmission, but Infiniti’s 6MT package also includes a Sport Package . As with most premium rides, there are plenty of option packages to add on, but the G37 Convertible’s price tag favors well against the $44,550 base price of the BMW 328i convertible.

Per the industry trend, the G37 Convertible features a three-piece retractable hardtop, retaining the two-door’s coupe-like roofline. The retractable hardtop also gives the G37 Convertible a little more cold weather credibility.

The G37 convertible marks the first Infiniti drop top since the M30 convertible – which was discontinued in 1992 and made famous by the movie Three Kings — and will inevitably lead to the question ‘Does Lexus make this model?’

As expected, the car will share the same 3.7L V6 used in the G37 coupe, delivering 328 horsepower. The upgrades for 2009 across the line will also include a new optional 7-speed automatic transmission, an optional sport brake package, new design 18-inch wheels and standard Scratch Shield paint.

The G37 Convertible will roll into Infiniti dealers on June 19th, just in time for the top down weather.

Looking at it from the side shot, it doesn’t due much for me. It looks bland. I like it better in coupe form. I think the BMW 328i convertible looks better.

I do not like that dash at all. This isn’t very appealing to me.

Yeah, the interior is not very exciting.. there are some interesting elements, but nothing that sticks out. The exterior seems a bit wafty with the belt line on the rear with a directional crease – however the direction is lost in the front with its wallowy curves… This is what happens when you have two designers working on the car at the same time without talking to each other!

It almost seems to be inoffensive. A nice, clean-looking design, but bland.

It really has lost in translation that which makes the coupe a looker…

although the car looks very good, but with that price…it can goes down to the toilet.

Personally this is akin to the Lexus SC430, the most recent model.

It doesn’t look half bad.

The only thing this car have over the 328 is the horsepower. Considered BMW have better resale value & free service program- the G is hardly a deal.

From the car-magazine reviews, its got like 2 grocery bag worth of trunk space left & hardly any leg room left when the top is down. I guess you will have to have your back seat passengers carry all the luggage on the next trip to Vegas.

I see some GTR in the roofline, perhaps it is the angle of the shot. Keeping it in BMW topless range is not the best idea, after all BMW has better cachet. On another hand you get more ponies, if anyone who will drive it will have any idea what horsepower is. Since I am not interior designer, interior does not bother me one way or another, it all make sense from the pilot seat only: comfy and ergonomically right or not.

Price is a bit steep, but being the owner of a G37 sedan, I must say the interior is pretty darn nice. It’s certainly one of those cars that just doesn’t photograph well but when seen in person is really cool.

I don’t care what everyone says, I’ve seen both those cars and I will always pick the Infiniti! The interior is 10 times better than the boring bmw!

Do these car companies have any grasp of reality ?? Who will pay for these cars ?

Their sales volume at this price range will kill them. Witness the Maxima sales dud.

The Maxima. Someone needs to tell the engineering world that CVTs belong in snowmobiles and tractors not automobiles.

@ Real + johny… nothing wrong with a CVT, much prefer it over a traditional cog-powered slush box. Nissan has really got them down to a science at this point. That said, it is a “premium” convertable, so for around $44k, its not that bad, and people will buy it (in fairly limited) quantity.

@idrinor … agreed, infiniti interiors are significantly more interesting than those of the germans.

This has to be the cheapest price for a manual transmission option I’ve ever heard of in recent years!

I like the simple profile with the roof down. Very clean. What I do want to see is a profile with the roof up….

@Hyperion: Some manufacturers (Honda comes to mind) pay you to take a manual transmission (i.e. the option is -$___). Also, the Ontario government had a program (perhaps still does?) that gave $1000 cash discount at purchase to go manual for the 1 extra MPG that it squeezes out on most models… For a fancy high-tech manual though, I agree that $50 is a deal. Think they would sell me just the tranny for $50?

I’m definitely a BMW over Infinity guy–I prefer the styling, the pedigree, and the driving dynamics. However, it’s pretty damn hard to argue against a 100hp deficit given equal MSRPs…. Infiniti may have a winner with this one.

****sterS,
you are right, I too like the BMW, or at least it’s name more than Infiniti. But, the interior of a bmw, at least by it’s looks, is something that could be pulled off by ford or gm if they wanted too. I don’t think they could even come close to the Infiniti’s interior lineup. You also have far better reliability with infiniti. It’s too bad they don’t have performance vehicles like BMW’s M division. I would pick up an FX50 over any bmw!

Though I am more of a coupe guy, I think it looks pretty good and at a decent price. Should do very well against the 335 convertible! Good job Infiniti.

this translated very well into a topless model. not as nice lookin at the coupe but still nice, the interior is function over fashion and im fine with that, id say infiniti has winner here. though many will still opt for the bmw for the free service blah and the name, someone who just wants a nice premium convertible with great driving dynamics would be a fool not to give the infiniti a serious look

also, considering you have to pony up almost 50k to get the g37’s real rival (the 335 convertible) it definitly makes the infiniti a better deal for the price

tThis is rather bland but its a true rival to the 335i and the IS350 convertible coupes for less money. But id much rather the 335i. its simply beautiful and well thought out
