Federal regulators are probing Infiniti's new three-row crossover after reports of a problem with the vehicle's emergency brake system.

Like many new cars, the JX35 employs various sensors for safety features designed to reduce or eliminate the severity of an impending accident. The radar-based system the JX35 uses as part of what the automaker brands as Intelligent Brake Assist can pre-charge and even apply the brakes if it detects an unavoidable collision. The technology is not unlike that used by various other automakers.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing, two JX35 customers have stated that "the intelligent brake assist system inappropriately activated emergency braking autonomously bringing the vehicle to an immediate and complete stop."

NHTSA has opened an investigation into roughly 8,000 2013 model year JX35 crossovers. It's possible that the investigation may eventually include other vehicles from different automakers since the technology Infiniti uses is licensed from an outside supplier.

NHTSA has not announced a recall, although one could follow the investigation if the agency thinks the issue needs to be addressed.
