[pricing update] 2008 Infiniti M

11/07/2007, 3:54 PM

By Drew Johnson

Infiniti release images of its restyled M line of cars earlier this year and today announced pricing for the model range. The big news for the 2008 M lineup is that Infiniti’s all-wheel drive system will be available on the 4.5-liter V8-powered M45. The new model, the M45x, will join the M35x in offering the stability of all-wheel drive.

The new M will debut Infiniti’s Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) system. Also new for 2008 is the Sport Package, replacing the M Sport models. The Sport Package will include unique exterior and interior styling, Rear Active Steer (RAS) and 19-inch wheels and tires. The M also receives new electronics such as 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and new white and violet instrument panel and interior lighting. Powertrain options remain unchanged. This is the first restyle of the M since its introduction two years ago.

The base M35 will start at $43,050 with the M35x listing for $44,800. The V8 powered M45 will be priced from $49,350, with the newest model and most expensive M model, the M45x, starting at $51,850.

It looks as if the rear end of this third generation got slimmed down somewhat, so that it now almost has the look of the original crappy M35. Otherwise, looks good. Also, would be nice to see what the base car will look like, as most of these shots are Sport models.

As far as all these 5-series comments, read C&D two months ago when they had the long term test of this car. The die hard BMW guy said he would strongly consider choosing this over the 5-series. All of the testers were very surprised about how great the car is, and how it held up so well after 30,000 miles (recent 3-series long term test was a mess of repairs, although covered by BMW).

This car gets so little attention in the marketplace, so it’s a great ride for the non-wannabe.

I think it’s an improvement stylewise. The only thing that’s never looked right to me is the rear-most side windows. I’ve read it’s a great performer though. And considering the reported advantage in reliability compared to its primary competition, it sounds like a good alternative to the 5-series.

I wonder what the “new white and violet instrument panel and interior lighting” looks like?

At this past Canadian Auto Show I spent far too much time inside both the M35 and M45 variants and found the interior to be one of the very nicest places to be in all of cardom (Bently / Maybach / Rolls super-lux excluded). The Audi A8 / A6 and Mercedes CLS were a solid notch above the Infiniti, but that’s it, IMO. The interior of the oft-mentioned 5 series felt cheaper and wasn’t nearly as attractive and inviting. The Infiniti was also nicer than the E Class.

The reviews of this car are phenomenal in every car mag (except for dismal mileage). I’ve never driven it, because in real life it’s a tad bland and, like all Infitinis and NIssans, will lose it’s cache a bit early.

I still think MB is the way to go. 10 years later, the designs look fresh and stylish. Plus, there are so many redesigns and models coming out with MB, no one knows if you’re driving this iteration or the last!

BMW much?

I could have mistaken the profile of the car easily with a BMW 3 series. Specifically, I’m talking about the roof line and C pillar, which although the C pillar is longer at a lesser angle, it seems you could have fit the top of this Infiniti M onto the 3 Series (which would look better, but similar).

Acura is the innovator of the Jap luxury car without Acura there would be no Infiniti or Lexus. Acuras technology is the most innovative in the business and they were the first to put in dash nav in the RL and TL. The current MDX and TL are the best selling luxo vehicles out there.
Audi MB Bavarian Motor Works then
Acura Lex Infiniti

“The curent MDX and TL ate the best-selling luxo vehicles out there.”
I hope by “luxo,” you don’t mean “luxury,” because THOSE ARE NOT LUXURY VEHICLES. One’s an ACCORD, and the other’s a PILOT.

“The most innovatibve technology in the business? sure, there’s no such thing as a bugatti or a vette or a BMW. Hell, a Prius is more inovative than a gussied up accord.

I like the “M” although I’d only buy it nissan-badged.

Cars like the TL and the M have been around and will stay around bc they are based on great cars. If you were ever to drive one you would know but instead you want to rant on here about how they are gussied up whatevers and then you praise lesser vehicles. Please make a statement that has some merit to to it

The only thing I can agree on with you is that I like the Lambda’s, well I like the Saturn Outlook. The next Pilot has to come strong to compete with that.

do-over

1115; i’ll admit that the diamante, for whatever reason, wasn’t a sales winner. The 929 was a nice enough car; the Millenia aimed really high, but just didn’t work.

It was like a lot of the GM products early this decade: a great car, but without much style. That’s ironic, because mazdas today have plenty of style.

But, it was NOT a 626. In retrospect, maybe mazda should have launced a luxury division, but then they would’ve had to either come out with another “luxury” model, or just rebadged the 626 (and maybe the Navajo/Explorer)

Anyway, the fact that the TL is a gussied up accord, is a valid point to stress. Now, someone said the NSX was essentially an accord, and while they kmight have had the same taillights or something, that comparison just doesn’t make sense.

I’ve driven just about every car I’ve commented on.

what “lesser vehicles” have I praised?

I like teh acadia more for some reason, but i’ll probably get an outlook, just to make up for the saturn i should’ve bought instead of my honda. But I might get a CX-9; the Mazda5 is cute enough, but realistically, if I’m going to carry kids and cargo, it’s going to cost me some coin.

maximus: datsun’s what i choose to call Nissan’s faux-luxury division when I’m not on the clock.

I have AC/heat, all that stuff in my exuirban house, and I use them. It get’s hot as a fool here. In Southern cali, there are these great things called Thomas Guides.
If you like “Nav,” that’s fine. I’m actually not against it. I would not mind having it if it were thrown in for no cost, but I’m not paying dealer markup.

daihatsus (at least in australia) were decent, but there’s a reason they left the U.S. market. I wou’d even take an ACCORD over a daihatsu!

Best “Jap” (sic) cars are probably either Nissans (Incl. datsuns) or Subarus — although I drove the new Tundra (for work) Friday and i was impressed, which didn’t match my expectations

Tempos, I understand, are supposed to be crep, but mine, even though I let in run out of oil twice, was the first car I ever sold.

Honestly, while it’s not a bad car, I would be going straight to BMW at this price point. I wouldn’t even look Infiniti’s way. Or I’d go over to Cadillac once the CTS-V arrives.

Somehow Lexus cranked their prices and made it stick, but Infiniti has not had such luck. Not too many people are willing to part with much more than 40k for an Infiniti for whatever reason – although they are superior vehicles to their Lexus counterparts.

Ricardo, I agree with what you’re saying, but I think Lexus is a much more refined car than its infinity counterpart. Everyone made fun of lexus for copying Benzes on their early designs… but it was genius. With a great marketing plan, we now associate a lexus to be more close to its German counterparts than its Japanese one.

11/08, 10:30 AM

posted by:

Atourya, I disagree about Lexus. I personally think of Lexus as a refined Cadillac of old but with international/euro-inspired styling – basically a very very comfortable vehicle with a lot of gizmos in a package that suggests a hint of German heritage. Benz-like but with even less performance – but a much cushier road cruiser.

I associate Infiniti with BMW-reputed performance but with a different take on style – not necessarily regional. Yes, a Lexus is more refined in a smooth way, but an Infiniti kicks butt in a performance way. Infiniti’s major drawback is that, for the money it does not offer more than it’s established competitors but it also does not have the brand panache or dealership experience. I also have to admit – from Day One I thought the sound of the name “Infiniti” was lame and contrived. Same with the Acura name.
