Infiniti confirms M35 Hybrid for 2012

10/07/2009, 12:44 PM

By Drew Johnson

Joining the luxury hybrid race started by Lexus, Infiniti confirmed on Wednesday that it will offer a hybrid version of its all-new 2011 M. Dubbed the Infiniti M35 Hybrid, the eco-friendly luxury sedan will arrive in Infiniti dealerships in spring 2011 as a 2012 model.

Based on the next-generation of the M sedan, the M35 Hybrid will be the first Nissan vehicle to uses the automaker’s in-house developed hybrid technology. Nissan’s new hybrid technology utilizes a single electric motor mated to a twin-clutch system, allowing for a single prop shaft to the rear differential. Infiniti says the new technology allows for “linear performance” while keeping the driving dynamics of a conventional rear-drive vehicle.

As the car’s name implies, Infiniti’s 3.5L V6 engine will also be part of the hybrid equation, although Infiniti failed to reveal total output.

Depending on driving conditions, the hybrid system can aid the V6 engine in power, or power the vehicle completely in EV mode. No fuel economy figures were given.

Power for the M’s electric motor will be supplied by a “laminated” lithium-ion battery pack. Developed by parent company Nissan, the Japanese automaker says the new technology allows for double the power while maintaining the same size footprint of conventional batteries.

The M35 Hybrid will be available in the United States and Europe.

That is going to be an awesome car. The new M looks hot and it will be nice to have the choice of a hybrid. Good job Nissan/Infiniti. It’s about time there was a good looking sporty hybrid available.

The badge is terrible on the trunk. Looks like it wants to run away from itself for being so dull.

A4,
I think I agree. Or maybe it’s the fact that the logo is so close to the Infiniti name. I would remove the name and leave the badge on.

I agree i think the badge looks too bad, they should just call it HM35 or M35H or make the M35 badge green or something but the badge looks bad, just like that Tahoe or Suburban hybrid, you know they say hybrid everywhere…

Yeah, batteries do suck, but until they come up with something better I guess the attitude is it’s best to not be caught with your pants down. And speaking of all things battery powered I’m probably going to be cruising the Wal-Mart on one of those scooter chairs before we see hydrogen as a viable alternative.

Idin, you’re in for a surprise :) GM has already pioneered the RWD hybrid idea and Infiniti found out and is looking to copy them. They won’t make the same mistake they made with the Volt.

New Infiniti M35 Hybrid? Awesome!

I really like the looks of the new M35, inside and out. Heck, I like the current generation too. If I was in the market for that kind of car, the M35/37 would be the car I’d get. I don’t need the power of the M45/M56 anyway…

Who cares about GM, it was always run by idiots, the only thing they got right is the Corvette and Camaro(as of recently).

I like the look aswell too, the interior looks nice, the front end has some G37 hint while the body has some CLS in it(In a good way) and the rear lights are XK, nothing bad but nice design.
