It looks nice, but I think it’s too pricey. But I’m biased. I want a ‘69 Charger with a modern Hemi engine swap, and refuse to look at another Dodge until I get it.

I remember running into the back of a Valiant in my Mazda RX-3 almost 3 decades ago (gawd it sucks to admit that) and at 20mph the front end of the old rotary rocket was pretty much crumpled back to the block.
The Valiant, however, only had a slight crease in the rear bumper. True story- built like **** brickhouses they were, and just about as ugly.

why are you guys complaining about the challenger? they are coming out with this way before the new camaro, and it’s only 40 grand for a sports car with alot of muscle, please show me a powerful modern car that is less than that with the same amount of power, please, the only other car I can think of is the vette, which starts out at 46 grand, and hey, at least the challenger is half the price of a viper, so stop complaining, 40 grand ain’t that much anymore

38K plus markup!? The SRT is going to have, what, 425 horsepower? I would think the Camaro V-8 model (SS, Z-28, whatever), will have at least 400 and Chevy will figure out how to get the base model out the door for (slightly)under 30K. The Camaro will probably be a few hundred pounds lighter seeing as how the Charger is 200 pounds more than the G8, which are basically their sedan counterparts. And if Cerebrus liquidates Chrysler before all these cars are made, do they get their deposits back? Just kidding, I think..

Well I could have for-seen this. But good for Dodge and the Challenger. For the first year heck maybe even two these are going to be selling like hot cakes. Dodge is also playing it smart by selling the SRT trim line first and getting all of their first top of the line models sold. Although I’m sorry but no 6-spd manual? C’mon really Dodge? I mean heck we already knew about this but that would stop me right there and I’d wait the Camaro to come out a year later and we know that they aren’t going to be offering a auto on their top of the line model.

SS4LIFE, I think the plan for the Camaro is actually to offer both 6-speed manuals and 6-speed automatics on at least the V8 models. Not sure about the V6, though I would expect at least a 6-speed automatic for that.

Hopefully american manufacturers can learn from this. I don’t even see these cars as being “retro” anymore; just American cars at thier best. I hope they continue to improve, without chasing other foriegn cars.

Yeah they’ll offer I’m sure both an auto and manual for their top model. And of course an auto for their V6. They also better be 6spd autos as well. I’m sure though as the Challenger and Camaro have been out for more than a year they’ll get their drivetrain offerings together. I just can’t believe that they are only offering only autos on the first Challengers. Doesn’t matter though because they will sell.

38K aint that bad a price. how much was the GTO when it came out? at least this one looks the part. how many Mustang versions come out that top out at 50K? plus some people seem to think that its just a badge and spoiler..no, its bored out and bigger than the regular 8. what else is amazing is that no ones really seen it in real life or pictures (teasers dont count) but still willing to pay 20K over—now thats crazy!

SRT is truely a laughing stock of a name. The fast but horribly flimsy and ugly Neon, the boxy and ugly Caliber, and now at least 4 models (Charger, 300, Magnum, Challenger) made with 5-speed commutermatics. Yea, awesome lineage.

If I were going to be releasing photographs of what is to become a flagship for retro enthusiasts, I would sure as hell have better fit-and-finish. Take a look at the wheel picture and see how the front nose piece fits to the sheetmetal fender near the top. Take a look at the rear trunk picture, note how the lower black inset pieces, under the orange paint, are off? Whoever set this car up for PR purposes should have his or her ass fired!

Bolex: When the GTO came out it had an MSRP of like 33k and the 04 model was the first year with the LS1 making 350hp. In 05 it got the LS2 with 400hp and a split dual exhaust. Then 06 really just had new taillamps. I saw them sticker on the lots between 35k-28k with rebates and employee discount. But if you ask me the GTO was priced at a bargain. Granted it’s a heavy Goat, and it was still a little higher priced then the Mustang GT that has 100hp less but cost 5k less. My buddy has one and loves it. Seeing that the Challenger has 425hp and is costing around 38k four year later then when the GTO first came out it’s probably about the same. cost wise that is.

I’ll take mine with the SRT4 Turbo Neon engine

I’m wondering, why on the “teaser” shots where you’d think everything would be like jewelbox quality, why there’s a huge gap between the trunk and RR fender, and it doesn’t even line up! You’d think that for at least the promo shots that they’d shim that thing so it lines up. I don’t get it.

cool is a matter of opinion. dodge is going to sell a lot of challengers because there are a lot of people out there who are middle aged (not picking on the middle agers) and going through a life crisis who think this joe blow car is going to give them back their glory days. i have nothing wrong with people remenicing about their hayday. besides the looks and perhaps some of the power, this car is just a fashion plate…no more, no less.

Actually Madcapp statistically on average the Baby Boomer generation is the wealthiest generation today. Compared to other age groups middle age and younger people 18-29. That’s also just common sense. I also bet that the average age of someone purchasing the Challenger will probably be somewhere in the mid to high 30’s or even lower 40’s. I’m also sure a lot of middle age people will also be buying this. Way more than younger people. And the younger people that will be buying this will probably be those that do have a good job, or want one just because it’s the latest car out. I also bet that the rappers will probably be buying this and throwing some 20’s or 22’s on this very quickly. Stay tuned to BET to see how many of these are going to be in their music videos. They loved the Charger, so they’ll love the Challenger.
But yeah there will be those younger cars enthusiasts that will want to buy it if they can afford it. Probably the lower priced R/T and base models.

Actually if you look up Generation X on wikipedia, the current age range is 43-27. That I believe, will be the approximate age range of the Challenger buyer, give or take a few years. The fact that baby boomers have thus far been historically the wealthiest, doesn’t mean they aren’t entering the twilight of their working careers where they’ve already had their toys, and are now becoming cheap in preperation for retirement, its a natural cycle. The only reason baby boomers are currently the wealthiest is a natural factor of an increasing standard of living. Its the same way that new movies keep generating more money and bigger audiences every year. And in 20 years, you’ll be able to read all about how generation X is the wealthiest, then They’ll be replaced in time.

As far as me wasting my time watching BET, don’t hold your breath. I’m sure rappers will rent Challengers to have as props in their videos, just like they’ve been doing with supercars. Then when the cameras stop rolling, it will all be taken away just like with MC Hammer in the Geico Commercials. Life comes at you fast.

I agree Madcapp. Also, Gen X would be the kids of baby boomers. Growing up hearing about the great cars of the “good old days” from their parents definitely puts nostalgic value for Gen X buyers.

A new Cuda the size of a Duster with a s/c 4.7 and a 6-speed would work.Why does the Challenger weigh so much,my 1970 Challenger was only 3600# and the new one 4000#wtf.Plymouths were always quicker and faster,Max wedge and hemi s/s,Superbirds,68 hemi Cudas,Pro Stock Dusters,Cudas,Arrows.Every Top Fuel Dragster,Funny Car,and all the Top alcohol classes use a chrysler Hemi.Leaving all the also rans to fight it out in lesser classes or whining until the sanctioning body outlawed a superior vehicle built by Chrysler.We have had some mistakes,the Cricket by Plymouth comes to mind,But the Corvair or the Fiesta were pretty forgettable.The new Challenger looks great and I would trade my 2005 Mustang in tommorrow for one,but I would trade it in today for the 3000# Cuda.

The 09 R/T is the one to get…better fuel economy, 6 speed manual, less money. You can let the suckers line up for the 08 SRT version.

I agree with Madcapp. The SRT version is overpriced, and the auto-only 2008 year is just pathetic.

Also, SRT models do NOT get the lifetime powertrain warranty. The R/T is a vastly wiser car.
