The Detroit News has an interesting look at GM’s ‘color lab’ at its Tech Center in Warren, Michigan. It may be hard to believe, but an entire studio is dedicated to solving such riddles as how to make a better silver or what the “new” black will be. “Blue is going to be the biggest story for ’07, ’08 and ’09,” said Christopher Webb, a color designer who works at the center. Another big trend is what some designers call a “return to color” — infusing neutral shades with more color so they have a richer, more complex appearance. Of course, GM is not the only company dedicating resources to predicting the right trends. As Daimler Chrysler ’s David McKinnon points out, choosing the right colors can be critical. “Fashion can change in three months. We need three or four years. It’s not a fast process.”
