Insiders: Second-generation Cadillac XLR unlikely

09/30/2008, 4:35 PM

By Nick Aziz

XLR R.I.P.? It’s definitely looking that way. If the recent, modest refresh of the Cadillac XLR convertible left you wanting more, chances are you aren’t gonna get it. Well-placed sources have now told us that the XLR will be killed off in a few years’ time.

Debuting in the 2004 model year, Cadillac hoped to sell about 6000 of the luxury hot rods a year. Unfortunately it has never met those goals. In fact, at the end of 2007, GM had only managed to sell 1750 copies.

Whether GM will attempt an all-new performance convertible in the future is anyone’s guess at the moment. For now though, the XLR will solider on in its current state. However when its platform-mate, the Corvette, is redesigned around 2012, the chances of the Cadillac coming along for the ride are slim to none.

Not long ago, we flatly asked GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, “when the new C7 Corvette arrives, will the Cadillac XLR be along for the ride?”

“That is way too specific,” said Lutz.

Wow only 1750 copies in 2007. I wonder what need more oil for GM has to say about that.

Big Mistake, Give it the same attention they give the CTS and they would sell more!!!!

Design wise this has been such disappointment. The XLR never live up to the Concept Evoq. An Allante redo would have been better than this. I thought GM should have had a convertible HrdTp as an option for the corvette, it would have made more sense and looked better.

this car has always baffled me. i’m surprised gm didn’t decide to square off the wheel arches to match the rest of the car when they were designing this monstrosity. i’m even more surprised having seen a few of them being driven, all the while remembering that someone willingly paid in excess of $100,000 for one.

Bad idea.

With GM downgrading the Escalade to a Lambda, and possibly killing off the DTS/STS replacement, killing the XLR, too, will mean no halo vehicle. No vehicle in the Cadillac line that’s above the CTS in size/price/class.

Cadillac, with these changes, will become exactly what Buick should be, instead of a true luxury brand competitive with the rest of the world.

While the XLR isn’t a hot seller, and its demise isn’t much of a loss sales-wise, this car is the production version of the first example of Cadillac’s design renaissance: The Evoq concept. It holds too much symbolic value as both a halo vehicle and the keystone of Cadillac’s design philospohy.

The reason Cadillac isn’t selling more is because it’s just not competitive with the XK, SL-Class, 911, etc. It’s not as fast, its interior isn’t as well-made or feature-laden, and it’s just as expensive as its competitors. Cadillac needs to do BETTER, not shrink from what it hasn’t done particularly well at lately. And that goes for the vehicles above the CTS in size and price, too.

True words. The XLR was one of the designs “saved” by Mr. Lutz upon his arrival at GM.

.
I think though that a 4 or 5 place convertible on the upcoming “alpha” small RWD platfform would be a better investment.

There was really no place for the XLR in the market anyway. It’s slower than the corvette (last time I checked. could be wrong) and not as luxurious or good looking as it’s foreign rivals.

Cadillac is hard-pressed to find a market above 60k, especially 6-7 years ago.
$15k more than a Lexus SC, with a sub-par interior, made for a final 3rd strike.
GM didn’t have the guts to make the Sixteen when times were better.
So don’t wait up for a halo vehicle.

It was DOA because it used the hapless Northstar. Jeezus, there are V6’s that get more power than that lump o’ turd. In V-form it was pretty good, but then too expensive. Interior was terrible too. I really like the way they look on the road personally, especially in black, but I’d get a vette over one of these any day.

When you think about it this perfectly symbolic of all things General Motors: only they could let the halo slip far enough to become a noose.

this could have been a good car- but since GM won’t have something out do it’s precious Corvette, the XLR was and has been DOA, why buy this and instead of the ‘Vette? the ‘Vette is at the top of the food chain and everything else is below it

XLR is a hot ride no matter what anyone says. THose units were strangled by production, not lack of sales boys. Get a clue. GM will return to Cadillacs halo car, when they are done with the full revitalization of Buick, Pontiac and Saab

They are built in Bowling Green alongside a very hot selling Corvette. GM chose to prioritize here and the XLR didn’t get the attention. Americans are beating down the doors to get a Vette, they know that the car is 8/10’s of what an XLR is for a fraction of the cost.

I’ll miss it, and I think it is a great looking car, but the unfortunate reality is it just didn’t have much of an impact on the market, and it probably was not a profitable venture for Cadillac. Financially, it probably doesn’t make sense to continue to build it.

If you were getting your tail kicked up and down the block, you might not want give it any attention either.

You say that the people love both cars.,

Then why make 50k units of a $50k car people love, and 2k units of a $80k car people love.

Either GM is dumber than we think, which would be saying something, or it was a poorly executed market/price strategy by GM, a much more likely story.

Admit defeat, learn, and grow.

This is the legacy of having too many brands. There are simply too many models that GM and its bean counters have to consider. Just imagine if Toyota had 3 or 4 other brands between Toyota and Lexus. It would mean not as much development expertise could be spent on Lexus. Simple solution, kill Buick,Pontiac and GMC.

As far as the XLR specifically, I much prefer its styling to the boring SL. But this is a lifestyle segment, i.e. “snob appeal” rules. It really wouldn’t matter if the XLR was a better car, but it wouldn’t hurt. Also this is really more about the Corvette, which GM protects at other models’ expense. In other words, Chevy snoots won’t let the XLR have more performance than the Corvette. In the 50’s and 60’s, Caddy would have autonomy to do what they wanted.

Saab is under the GM umbrella therefore they should be sold here because the money rightfully goes back to Detroit. If GM workers have a shop setup in a sh1thole Country like Sweden, then so be it. GM is a global leader so why not set up shop across the globe? U can’t be that ignorant
