The Environmental Protection Agency has published its 2006 car fuel efficiency stats, including a list of most fuel-efficient cars available in the United States. The Honda Insight toped the list, getting 60 miles to the gallon in the city, and 66 on the highway. The Toyota Prius came in second, with 60 miles per gallon in the city and 51 on the highway. The Insight and Prius were virtually in a league of their own, with the closest competitors being Volkswagen’s diesel offerings. The diesel Golf manages 37/44mpg, while the diesel Jetta gets 35/42mpg. Ford dominated the SUV segment with the 36/31mpg Ford Escape Hybrid. The regular Escape and Mazda Tribute came in second, with 24 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway.
