The pony car wars have historically been about horsepower and ¼ mile times, but it appears as though we are transitioning to a more sophisticated era. Following Ford’s serious revamp of the Mustang’s interior, Chevrolet is said to be working on a revised Camaro interior for the 2012 model year.
With the term “class competitive” now considered a dirty phrase at General Motors, the Detroit automaker is said to be readying a significantly improved cockpit for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro. Details of the revision still remain sparse, but a GM insider revealed to Edmunds’ Inside Line that much of the redesign will focus on the Camaro’s dash, particularly the area in front of the passenger’s seat.

Although no mention was made of improved interior materials, we suspect some softer plastics could be on the way. The Camaro has been criticized for its use of hard plastics, making the car feel cheaper than it really is.

But lest we forget what the pony car is really all about, Chevrolet is also planning a significant power upgrade for the 2012 Camaro. According to Inside Line’s source, GM will finally launch the long-rumored Z28 model for 2012. Packing the same supercharged V8 found under the hood of the Corvette ZR1 and Cadillac CTS-V, the Camaro Z28 will be good for at least 550 horsepower. The Z28 will mark the second new Camaro in as many years, following the Camaro Convertible for 2011.
