Spied: Robert Downey Jr. (as Tony Stark) drives Audi R8 V10 Spyder in Iron Man II

07/16/2009, 5:15 AM

By Nick Aziz

Although Iron Man II, staring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, won’t hit movie theaters until May of 2010, our spies been busy catching the hot wheels around Hollywood. Last month, photographers shot Stark’s custom racecar, and on Wednesday, they caught Robert Downey Jr. himself driving a pre-production Audi R8 5.2-liter V10 convertible while a camera car caught the action!

Decked out in full production trim – including the V10 badges – this is likely the best look you’ll see until the expected Frankfurt Motor Show debut.

And the latest rumors suggest that the V10 powertrain may be the only one offered for the convertible model.

Besides the R8 5.2-liter V10 Spyder and Robert Downey Jr., other Ironman II stars include Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Micky Rourke, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson.

I though the hard top was a nice car. I’d take this over an Italian supercar.

I can’t wait to see this movie! This r8 looks pretty good, especially from the rear with its engine bay air scoop/vent thing! I would not mind having this…when money comes to me…in about 12 years!

These are real “spy” photos? I think these are purposely leaked by Audi and the makers of Iran Man to boost some interest. They look professionaly done and from a variety of angles…

Ont he R8 – what’s up with those black mirror housings? They should always match the paint scheme IMO or they look like they belong on an Accord DX.

Jake,
it’s actually carbon fiber! I’ll take carbon fiber over anything with paint on it!

JakeK66 – They’re real (spy photos!)!!! Half of the traffic lanes were open and these were shot from a passing truck by one of my regular photographers. They rank in my top 5 all-time favorites of spy pix. Cool, aren’t they?

humm…now I say this with the understanding that the R8 is based on the Gallardo…but judging by the side profile of the car and the back 3/4 view I would say that this is a very, very early prototype…the side of the car looks almost exactly like that of a LP560-4, maybe just a LP560-4 with different facias? could be they are only shooting this car from the front

Before I post anything, I’ll go ahead and get NMOFGM’s usual comment out of the way for everyone- “Useless piece of junk only a mechanic will ever see because it will never be running, buy GM, they rock, american revolution blah blah blah” Ya we get it.

I am surprised they didn’t keep the glass engine cover over the engine but this car looks incredible! Wow, the coupe looked so good and the shape of it I thought might be hard to turn in to a converible but they certainly pulled it off. They did an awesome job with the shape of the rear cover still (very Gallardo Spyder-ish looking, duh).

the pics are very nice, good camera (and photographer) there…it’s a shame we live in a day and age where images are so freely copied and distributed without giving credit that the copyright has to be plastered right across the subject of the image, though…

They could differentiate it a lil’ bit more from it’s Italian sister, but it’s obviously good looking.

This car just isnt the same without a sideblade, they should have made a targa.

Wow! That jib on the tracker car is a beast!

Samuel Jackson plays Nick Fury, and has been in other Marvel movies, too. He tries to get Tony Stark to take on The Hulk, which may happen later.

Brenda,

from an amatuer photographer like myself, those are pretty amazing for spy photos! You had me fooled, honestly. Kudos to your men/women on the team for the great job, I’m truley impressed.

idrinorbarsaku,

I know they are carbon fiber, but they still look out of place on the mirror housings, unless it’s on a black or dark grey car, I think they should be body colored. On white they just stand out too much. I’, sure they are an option though, so when I order mine I can get them in white (or my exterior color choice of silver) to go with the rest of the car and even if they are standard I can always get them painted. Hypothetically speaking if I run into $180k of course ;)

Can this car get anymore beautiful or perfect? This is possibly the best looking car in the world right now. Although it is essentially the Gallaro, its executed so much better than the Lambo. Can’t wait until this car is debuted.

@ zeegone , maybe they will offer a transparent engine cover as an option, would look even better that way.

@ A4 , i’m with you on the sideblades , i think this is how it should look like :

@pavlindrom: Sammy L is playing nick fury like at the end of the first Iron Man

im liking the look of the drop top a lot more than the original, but this definitely needs the side blades

yeah scratchy, thats what they should have done, it almost looks like a GM rebadge job the similarities to the Gallardo are quite obvious from angles like the rear 3/4 views.

what happens when they take a turn too sharp and the camera truck crushes the audi and Rob.? that truck would be so fun to mount a turret on the end of that crane arm.
