Italian man creates handbuilt supercar from scratch

04/16/2008, 4:45 PM

By Drew Johnson

Filandri Moreno may not be Enzo Ferrari, but he sure dreams like the late founder of the Italian supercar maker. Moreno, a 47-year old citizen of Northern Italy, has emerged from his garage after building his own supercar for the last four years. The amazing part about the car, which Moreno dubbed the Uragano (Italian for Hurricane), is that Moreno built the entire car himself — every detail, from the car’s brakes to suspension.

The only thing that the Italian-native didn’t build himself is the car’s Audi-sourced 4.2L V8, which Moreno got from a donor Audi A8.

Not much else is known about the Uragano — including performance specs — but it looks as though Moreno added a turbocharger to the Audi mill.

The overall look of the car is pretty slick, with some obvious influence from earlier Ferraris. The Uragano even pulls off the bare metal look quite well.

There are no plans to put the Uragano into production, but it’s pretty impressive that one man could design a build an entire car from scratch — excluding the car’s engine — in just four years.

You’d think when they say built by hand from scratch it was like an Italian dish or something. I think they would be better off building it the new way on a computer then do the clay models and then bring it to production.

…that would mean he probably started after GM announced the new Camaro.

That’s pretty impressive for having been built by a single person.

Not a fan of the styling, but the man definitely possesses some 1337 skillz to pull off something like that.

Yeah, he kinda gets a pass because he made it himself. That’s really cool. I just hope some random guy doesn’t plow it in the parking lot.

The Uragano even pulls off the bare metal look quite well. – It has no paint!!!

I see a lot steel, that thing is not light. Awesome build none the less.

That definitely is impressive coming from a single man’s efforts, no doubt.

But if I were him I’d be really weary of putting the thing through performance tests. (the article mentions that performance stats aren’t available)

I’m not sure it could survive the tests!

It’s hard to knock something that one man built on his own…so I won’t.

I agree it’s an impressive self build, but the body looks like something I drew back when I was 10 yrs old.

I think Tesla will sue him for patent infringement. They wanted to build this first.
I would call this lad a renaissance motor head.

He should consider taking the next step and have someone finish the body. That would do it so much more justice, it’s impressive none the less.

Not a bad job for someone that hand built it. Only thing I like about the car is the arrangements of the headlights. He could have put a bit more attention to cleaning up the engine bay, like polishing the rollcage and give it a good paint job.

oh and look at the size of the Turbo, almost the size of one you’d find on a drag car.

I can’t believe some people on here have the balls to talk bad about what this guy did. That’s a VERY cool car. I’d like to see one of the backyard jack @$$’s that are making fun of this guy do something like this. You guy’s have obviously never restores a car or built a race car, I bet you couldn’t even handle a soap box derby car.

Brava Italia. Not to be picky about a guy who fabbed his own car from scratch, but the metal work is sort of subpar. Aside from that, whoa.

This is totally awesome.

But its pretty clear he didn’t do everything other than the engine from scratch. The seats look like a pretty standard sport seat. I’m positive he didn’t make his own tires. Comparing the metal work on the body to the metal work on the wheels, I’m reasonably certain he didn’t do the wheels, either. And there are other mechanical bits, like the coil on the suspension, that I’m doubtful he did completely on his own.
