Reports of the GTO’s death are greatly exaggerated! According to GM Vice President Bob Lutz, the Pontiac GTO will return in 2008, alongside the 2008/2009 Chevrolet Camaro. Lutz told AutoWeek at the Geneva Motor Show today that the GTO will share the Zeta architecture with the new Chevrolet Camaro and Holden Monaro. Like the last ill-fated GTO, the 2009 GTO will be engineered jointly by GM in North America and Holden in Australia. Lutz said the new GTO project was only on hold for two months, but has since been revived. Lutz also said the rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform will be used for a new Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo, and an all new Buick model called the “Statesman.” Lutz said a new El Camino could come by ‘putting a Chevrolet face’ on a Holden Ute, but that’s unlikely at this time. The GTO and related programs, however, are back on “full tilt.” (The image shown at the right is the 1999 GTO Concept).

good news… as long as the car IS NOT retro and DOES NOT resemble that hideous 1999 concept at all.

yeah i hope it doesn’t look like the orange car in the picture… no vents and body add ons… If anything i think the body should be clean, slightly understated, with an agressive grill, and undeniably American… Similar to how the Dodge Charger is, but keep the GTO a 2 door RWD coupe…

It’s great news that they will have a rear drive platform! That opens the door to many future possibilities. Let’s hope they can make some affordable RWD models. That is where there is a market void that can be filled.

Pardon me, but I don’t get the retro thing at all. Is this some kind of weird attempt to bring back the good ol’ times or what? Instead of looking back at what was, try looking forward, be cutting edge.

Other then being rwd and V8 powered, I think the new Charger isn’t really an attractive car. While not something I’d buy, the Magnum is a bit better looking an d the 300 works best of the bunch..
A big part of the problem with GM’s US designers is all they seem to have been developing are various cookie-cutter SUVs and crossover vehicles. Pontiac also can’t seem to let go of the everything “sporty” needs boy racerish lower body cladding mentality..

It’s a pity Holden in Australia aren’t making anymore monaros though.. so what’s the deal with sharing architecture with something that doesn’t exist anymore?

In regards to Russell above, the Monaro was a spin off, of the Holden Commodore, which is a 4 door, rear wheel drive sedan and wagon. The new Commodore that is due for release in September is the first of the Zeta Architecture, which you guys might be lucky enough to have a piece of in the forms mentioned above.

I really like this car……doesnt exactly remind me of a GTO in the way that I think it should, but does a really great job for the effort. I think GM is in need of younger reprosetatives to bring this company back up out of the red. GM, to me, has allways been the company to wait for others to do something new and then when that something new turns out ok , then they jump on the bandwagon too. This is a safe way of doing business but in my view is also a dangerous way. Being the last to do something is not always good. I’m personally tired of cars that seem to have every gadget from the factory. I would like to see a good car come fromthe factory like the old day when all the electronics that were in a car ran the lights and ignition. To me, the more “JUNK” you put in a car. the more there is to break down. Keep it simple and powerfull and they seem to last longer and keep people happy. If you dont belive me then look back in history. Dont get me wrong, some of the things that they have are of good use, but there seems to be way more than there really needs to be. And remember….whats old ………is new again. It just goes round and round.

Will gm have the ballz to restyle the gto like the concept? That will be the only way to get my attention. Lets face it, a grand prix looking car with crappy suspension doesn’t make it a gto in my book. If u put a gto badge on the car it should at least look like o gto!

If anything Pontiac NEEDS to get back to the everything sporty look, thats what made the previous Grand Am, 97-03 Grand Prix, and Firebird/Trans Am so popular!
The G6 coupe is one of the ONLY cars I like appearance wise that is on the road right now (from any car company)!
That concept isn’t bad and by the way, ALL THE NEW DODGE AND CHRYSLER CARS ARE BUTT UGLY!!!

1st off we need a real pontiac motor in the GTO. Not a chevy!! 2nd can we make the car look like a 1967 GTO. Just something that makes us look at it and go “yeah, that’s it” Not this futuristic car that looks like it came out of the Jetson’s garage. Come on Pontiac!! look at the Mustang, it’s awesome!!

GM needs to use the Mercerdes Benz treament of taking a square car and giving it smoother lines while retaining the heritage of the orginal car. If the next GTO had the sleeker body of a 2002 Mercerdes Benz CL500 coupe with stacked headlights, split chrome grill, and yes chrome bumpers with great performance GM would have a hit.

I sell cars at a car mall that sells GTO’s and Dodge’s door handle to door handle and get to compare this stuff if you know what i mean. As nice a car the present GTO is, all it needs is some style. Something outstanding, it goes great, feels great (like someone said needs suspenion) priced right, and sized right with a real back seat . . . hmmm speaking of back seats, who ever mentioned the ALL DODGES ARE “UNDESIRABLE” LOOKING that is just YOUR opinion please state that! The R/T and up out handle out drive out feel have a beeter build quality than any “SPORT” car from GM, yes even the Vett and XLR! The only reason you say thier UGLY is probably cuz you like them, deep down inside your scared of them they’re tough and stout and you want them on your side hahaha . . . oh yeah number of GTO’s sold = 0 , number of Dodge Chargers R/T’s sold 12 . . . ??? The GTO on the new Zeta platform will rock and a GTO without “SOME HINT” of RETRO will be glued to the showroom floor like the present semi-upside-down-bar-of-soap with scoops. If it ISN’T retro’ed, It will just happen again! C’mon GM!!!!! STEP-UP your being CHALLENGED hahahahaha !!!

The GTO should have a cleaner look than the Camero or the Challenger. The car above is to close to a firebird on steriods.
Go back to the good clean looks Pontiacs use to have!!!
Challenger has come darn close to the pure look. GM should kick their ass with a clean retro that reminds everybody of the old school GTO! Goat!!
Let muscle car wars begin!!!!!
