From what I recall, the XJ220 was a COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISASTER for Jag. It was supposed to have V12 power and they got a few hundred HUGE Deposits as a result. THEN….the car was announced near production-time with only a V6 – the deposit-holders FREAKED and the XJ220 became a giant legal nightmare that left a bad taste to say the least in the Jag fan’s and buyer’s mouths….

While Jag had a good image in the past, and a few decent cars here and there, they ruined their own image. Though Ford underachieved with Jag, they did in fact keep them alive and were it not for Ford, it is a distinct possiblility that Jag would have given up the ghost long ago.
To suggest that Ford ruined Jags image is less than correct.

Jag’s Twin-Supercharged V8 w/ Racing Seats and Carbon Fiber (and likely a stripped down interior along the Clubsport theme) are a completely different performance style from AM’s V12 w/ bespoke bamboo/wood and leather – I don’t see them competing at all.

Thank you , InvisibleEcho, Sir. As of this Monday, I believe that’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all week.

Seriously, people need not forget Jag’s roots, whereas the XJ220 was a prime example. I’m all for the next XK. I’d love to see a war between Aston and Jag (after the proposed ‘sale’). It’ll sort of be Lucky # Slevin-ish; Boss vs Rabi. IMO, it’s not that other manufacturers don’t make cars that compete with Aston. It’s just that they don’t seem to have the same level of class—that step out in a $3000 suit that matches the interior class. The Panamera, for instance, is about as good an idea as the Cayenne.

I could easily see Jaguar getting that type of class back, if not having it already.

Uhhh… I don’t know how wise of a move it was for Ford/Jag to disclose their potential intention to compete with a company they’re currently trying to sell.

I probably wouldn’t have done it. But then again what do I know, I don’t have a multi-billion dollar company. On the other hand, I’m not posting multi-billion dollar losses.

Jag was meant to be priced against the Aston Martin, and I truely believe the instant that ford sells AM, Jag will quickly repair their recently “BAD” image. Jag has so much potential, it will be fun to follow Jag in the next few years to see how everything will play-out for them.

What they need to do is build an exotic to compete with lamborghini, Ferrari, Etc.
Alot of people don’t know, but up until the Mclaren F1 in 1994, Jaguar had a supercar called the XJ220 which had the title of “Fastest production car in the world, Followed by the Bugatti EB110. The XJ220 had a twin turbo V6 with 500HP which was capable of speeds near 220mph.
Jaguar used to have a long performance and racing history for decades. It’d be nice to see it come back.

well they build a XK-RR prototype of the previous generation XK but was not build as not to compete with the DB7.

I think it will hinge to some extent on what will happen to AM.
