Jaguar readying mid-engine Audi R8-rival

01/14/2009, 2:00 PM

By Drew Johnson

Jaguar may have just unveiled its updated XKR at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but the XK range won’t be the only performance two-door in Jaguar’s lineup for long. According to a new report, Jaguar is readying a mid-engine sports car to take on Audi’s R8.

Auto Express claims that it has the inside scoop on a new mid-engine Jag, set to debut in just over a year. The new model will take on Audi’s R8 and will beat the company’s F-Type to production. The F-Type will do battle in a lower segment, taking on the likes of Porsche’s Boxster.

Reportedly dubbed the XE, the new car will appear in concept form at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The XE will likely use Jaguar’s new 5.0L supercharged V8 mid-ship, marking the brand’s first mid-engine car since the XJ220 launched in 1991.

Design-wise, the XE is expected to take Jaguar’s new design language even farther, erasing virtually all ties with the current XJ.

I hope this comes out. Jaguar needs more models in order to get better.

However, at what point will Jaguar begin to infringe on Aston Martin territory?

They better address a more befitting front end or people with taste will look elsewhere.

My client has Tata Consulting doing some work for them. If Jaguar (owned by the same Tata) is any reflection of Tata Consulting company work, then new car will be much cheaper, but will not move much in any direction.

Borat, are you saying that Tata only cares about profit?! I’m shocked! (kiddin’). This should be an interesting one for sure. Two of my top five cars of all time are Jags, but I’ve never owned one (XK120 and E-Type) Anyone seen any drawings or computer renderings on what this might look like? I agree that the current grille has to go, the ‘91 Taurus / sucker-mouth thing.

gitcypher,

Jaguar and Aston have been owned by different people for more than a year now. They can compete as much as they like now.

And Jag does need more models to keep them competitive and growing. Sounds like Tata’s got a vision for Jaguar: XF coupe, F-Type, new XJ, new diesel, Daimler going head-to-head with Bentley and Rolls, and now this “XE” model.

VERY good.

Go Jag go, are Jaguar are on a role or what, this new XE model would be another amazing addition to this already sexy line up.

Gundy, I do suggest that every company should be concerned about profit. As a taxpayers, how many Citibanks and GM’s can we support? Welfare was inexpensive foreplay, compare to this.
What I am saying that if car will be developed, like their software it will be inexpensive and worthless. Brits have a saying” I am not wealthy enough to buy cheap things”

Sorry. My Aston comment was a bit ambiguous. I meant infringe as in is that what Jag wants to do? Are they trying to get into that ‘class’ of car… similar to Hyundai making the Genesis. In Hyundai’s case, they’re clearly aiming for luxury cars. I mentioned Aston specfically because of their former joint ownership.

@A4
So true, good sir. So true.

hey hummah, your an idiot… i assume that like most people, you are possibly into lamborginis? well where do you think lamborghini started? making tractors! then when he went to enzo ferrari to make a few suggestions, ferrari laughed in his face… not too long later the muira came out, one of the best looking and most advanced cars of its time… i sure hope you dont call yourself a car enthusiast because it would be a real disappointment.

Jaguar is becoming interesting, let’s see how you bring your old honor back… I’m looking forward and wishing ya well. Just keep moving towards an original design, better interiors, and better & more models. You should do fine if you keep to this… hmmmm, i may be aiming a little too high…

Jag better ditch those cheap, boxed off, plasitcy Ford interiors. Most potential Jag-buyers don’t want to see even a hint of Ford influence.
