Jaguar to unveil XJ replacement this year

01/07/2009, 4:39 PM

By Drew Johnson

Jaguar will clearly be trying to freshen its dated image with R and R-S versions of the company’s new XF sedan, but Jaguar’s revival will consist of more than just high-performance models. Following the XFR’s debut later this month, Jaguar plans to launch an all-new XJ replacement.

Although the new model will replace the XJ, it promises to be a whole new animal. Whereas the current XJ represents Jaguar’s past, the new model will carry the British automaker into modern day.

According to Channel4, the new XJ will take the form of a four-coupe, but will be more along the lines of an XK sedan rather than an XJ replacement. The decision to use sleeker proportions on the new sedan should give Jaguar a viable competitor to Mercedes’ CLS and upcoming models like the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide.

Power for the new sedan will be sourced from Jaguar’s all-new 3.0L diesel V6, as well as a range of gas V8s. A supercharged bent eight will be employed in the high-performance XJR model.

No official word on when we will see the new model, but insiders say the XJ replacement will make its debut sometime in 2009.

Looks like Jaguar’s PR guy is working overtime today. Maybe a concept at Geneva and production model in Autumn 2009 for sale Spring 2010?

I don’t know if this car should be badged an XJ. Buyers are going to want a proper 7, S, and A8 competitor. This should be called the XFS, and Jag should keep the current XJ in production until they can replace it with a proper large luxury car.

Jag roadsters are the sexiest looking things on the road. The four doors never appealled to me. Then again, I’m not a 60 year old blue hair who is only able to drive 20 mph max.

This is a large version of the XJ it has nothing to do with the XF. Like the XF it is largely a reskin of an eisting platform the XF used the S Type and the new XJ use the current XJ platform. The bodywork and interior are all new in both cars. There really isn’t anything new in this item other than some indication of the date

Need more oil for GM

Eh! Fail! Sorry Faguar, buyers are flocking to the new Buick Lacrosse. They want nothing to do with your fancy shmancy, unreliable Sh1t cars. Jaguar is a joke next to Buick.

Haha, Need More Oil for GM must have been up late drinking the kool-aid and got around to flaming this thread later than usual. When GM is forced to sell Buick to a Chinese company I wonder if NMOFGM will still be a Buick cheerleader. Hilarious.
