The XJ is Jaguar's largest and most prestigious sedan currently on the market. It might have retro looks, but it's based on an advanced all-aluminum architecture that sets it apart from the competition.
The XJ's main rivals are the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series. It manages to undercut both those vehicles in terms of price, while remaining quite competitive in terms of features and technology. The car's unique aluminum monocoque design is 60 percent stiffer and 40 percent lighter than the model it replaced in 2003.
The XJ comes standard in North America with a 4.2 liter V8 engine producing 300 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 310 pound-feet of torque at 4100 rpm. A six-speed automatic transmission comes standard, as does rear-wheel drive.
For the 2008 model year, a number of changes were made. Changes to the front, sides and rear of every model give the XJ a sportier, more muscular stance. Jaguar hopes the improved exterior will better signal the advanced technology that lies at its core.
Set into the front bumper are new upper and lower mesh radiator grills with chrome detailing. Behind the front wheels two power vents match those introduced on the new XK. New door mirrors carry integrated indicator lights.
A fully reworked rear end includes a reshaped bumper, subtle aero spoiler and revised tailpipe finishers.
One highlight of the 2008 XJ's improved interior is the option for air-cooled ventilated front seats. Heated seats remain standard equipment. The new seats also offer more comfort and support, Jaguar says.
A new JaguarVoice feature allows the driver to access a number of car functions by issuing voice commands. Other available features include Adaptive Cruise Control, airbags that detect passenger weight and position to determine deployment speed, and side-curtain airbags.
