Back in March, we told you about a bizarre incident that took place in Britain where a motorist drove for 60 miles at speeds over 135mph, claiming the accelerator had jammed on his BMW 318i. He also claimed the brakes “burnt out” after holding them for a few miles. Today, Reuters is reporting that the man who was driving the car has been arrested. Examinations of the car by BMW and police after the incident found no defects.

not a surprise. even if the accelerator HAD jammed, a simple flick into neutral and a coast to stop would have solved that…. or, just turn of the freaking car.

believe it or no, back in 1986, I had a very nice mk3 escort 1.6, that had a fault in the throttle where on occasion it would depress the accelerator by itself and take off.using clutch of course disconnected the drive, and a bit of working the accelerator worked it free, but it really used to happen.

JUST as we suspected.
what are the chances of an accelerator cable failure, complete braking system failure, automatic shifting failure and an ignition failure, all at once?
pretty slim. this guy’s trying to get his picture into one of those awful british murdoch-owned tabloids. probably worked, too.

This is not the first time a BMW has done this. No on can find the source of the problem and BMW will not admit to a problem as they have been sued for this issue in the past. The owner of that 318 should sell that car as soon as possible or replace the ECU; otherwise he could be facing fatal consequences the next time it happens. And at the very least he should install an Event Data Recorder before driving the vehicle again. At least this way the application of brakes would be recorded as “evidence rather than just “here say on the part of the driver. If it were me; I would have killed the ignition.
