Jay Leno drives the Chevrolet Camaro Concept

If you’re a car enthusiast, then you probably know comedian Jay Leno is one, too. On Friday, the Tonight Show host drove the new Chevrolet Camaro Concept into the parking lot at Bob’s Big Boy, during its weekly evening Classic Car Show in Burbank, California. Gallery after the jump…

Same gimmick as DCX did rolling up in the challenger. Looks cool, I just want to see a production piece.

Yes the main deciding factor in purchasing a car should be that Jay Leno drove it.

whatever, come back to us when the car is actually sitting on a car lot waiting to be purchased.

#1 ROFL! Yeah, I gotta agree that I’d rather see it in production, and soon!

it’s a “gimmick” only when you don’t approve.

otherwise, you’d use the phrase “effective viral marketing.”

i look at it this way: automakers are (finally) really interacting with the collector / enthusiast base in ways they never, ever have. is it a good thing? it is for photo ops and for sites like this. does it make for better cars ultimately? jury’s still out, but it seems like the feedback loop is actually functioning.

overall, a positive.

For a rich guy with hundreds of millions in cars he should dress a little better, everytime I see the guy he’s got the same goddamn denin shirt and jeans.

Viral only in that we are going to get sick of looking and hearing about the car before it every goes into production. GM needs a halo car that people (other than Jay Leno) can drive.

Ford nailed the Mustang and GM has some work to do on those headlamps and taillamps

This is not the 69 Camaro I remember or maybe they weren’t trying for that. The stang and Challenger nailed it.

You can just park that beauty into my driveway Jay and park it there, I want one!

The only thing the Mustang and Challenger “Nailed” is the nails in Fords/Chryslers coffin once the Camaro comes out. GM will own you

It’s a nice looking car, but maybe I could get it at 3/4 scale? Look at it! In pic one they can barely fit the whole thing in the frame. Fighter jets could take off from the hood. And in pic 4 – Jay Leno could take a bath in the engine compartment (yeah, it’s that clean as well). The car looks like it is positively about to eat him. And Jay Leno is not a little man.

America just isn’t interested in building a small car unless it’s supposed to be cheap (for the most part). Why can’t Saturn go a little upscale? Oh, but if they did that they’d have to make some 4,000 lb. coupe that Shaquille O’Niel (sp?) could really stretch out in. Yes, yes, I know about the Sky – every rule has its exceptions. Maybe the whole company will go in that direction, it would be nice. Look how well Chrysler has done with the Crossfire! Doh.

Is it any wonder that American cars have a rep for quality issues? If it isn’t a rebadged Toyota then it’s some 4,700 lb. monstrosity that’s as big as your living room and also about as rigid. Being big is hard on a car. In a few years when your 300M wobbles like a slowing top under hard acceleration some kid in an ‘93 integra that would fit in your trunk is gonna dog your ass. =(

Whoa! Where did that rant come from?

Personally I like the car. I also think the advertising is good to keep the concept out there. I also know that GM has *NEVER* had public reaction to any other concept like they have with this car.

As for not being the 69 camaro you knew, your right, its not.. and wasnt designed to be a 69.. it was designed with the 69’s cues, to evoke a heritage feel, while remaining modern. Any fool can go buy a warmed over foosed Challenger or Mustang (er I mean the new mustang and challenger concept) but I for one would prefer the more modernized Camaro. At least it doesnt look like a softer more rounded 69 camaro.

The Car is a Concept, remember that. things will change when it is produced. Thats a given. How much? has yet to be seen. Like it or not, respect it, for the design and for the fact that at least someone out there in the big three is listening to what the enthusiasts want / ask for.

Mr. Leno,

The money you are saving on clothes could be sent to Childrens research for cronic care and disease. My son has been diagnosed with DMD. Today 70% of children diagnosed with Cancer are cured. 100% with DMD, DIE. What is DMD? Like the saying goes, if you have to ask, then maybe you aren’t doing enough. So if you need a worth while project to “restore” -”life” into contact me. I have a car collection too but I maintain a little balance. I’m sure you give to charity, my goal is to focus on ones without cures.

I have to speak at a conference in DC 7/30/06 with several hundred health care professionals as the audience. Leave your check book at home and just attend. Afterward you can make up your own mind.

Thanks,
