We purchased our commander in March and am totally happy with it. I looked at many other vehicles and I gotta tell ya what you get for the money makes this vehicle better than a range rover or a tahoe or a armada as far as I am concerned. The ride is amazing, I happen to love the look yeah the gas mileage sucks but the room makes up for it. You can get a lot of options and comfort for what you would pay for a base model in most vehicles in the same category. For me the commander was the way to go. We are jeep people we own four now with the commander. We have a YJ, CJ, Willys and now the commander.

Sales have definetly not been as fast as some people would have hoped. But with the incentives pricing is more on par where it should have been to begin with. For the most part, owners appear to be satisfied with the vehicles over at the Jeep Commander forums:

If I didn't know you from Allpar Forums, Hemidakota, I would say YOU are the ignorant one. The whole point of this story about the Commander's slow sales is that it is NEW. The Tundra has been around since 1999 or something, and the Land Cruiser has been around even longer than that. The Tundra is in its final year and has a bigger replacement coming up. If the Commander isn't doing well just after its launch, that's not a good sign. That's what this post is all about.

Another ignorant posting…. we could discuss the $6-$7K mark (local San Diego) off for the 2006 Toyota Tundras that are not selling that well. Alternatively, we could even discuss the slow mover Toyota Land Cruiser that even sits onth lots longer than the Commander. That itself is a bigger laugh. Being silent is not “goldenâ€?, when trying to empty lots of trucks and SUVs from other brands. Check the local weekend papers in your areas to see what is happening. LOL

Though noting the inventory numbers for the Commanders is no different than other large SUV in its class.

Commander 29,900 units 101-days

PRODUCTION
October – 3,241
November – 3,825
December – 8,458
January – 4,209
February – 7,091

Annual expectation: 40,000 units

[...] LeftlaneNews wonders if the Jeep Commander is a flop? As has been previously mention on other sites, Chrysler has been giving away thousands of dollars to move new Commanders off of the lot. Up to $5500 in fact. While the actual sales goals of Jeep are not public knowledge as of yet, the sales have been slow. According to Jeep dealers, Commanders are beginning to move off of the lot. I think that a lot this has to do with a semi-backlash against SUVs as gas prices rise and concerns over the environment grow larger. The news as of late, would and has hindered the sales of all SUVs, especially the big ones. [...]

I realize that Chrysler's been trying to get all its products out faster, but they ought to slow it down just a bit and think things through. Rushing out a flurry of new products means they're just taking elements of their cookie cutter designs and pasting them here and there on their new cars. For instance, the interior of the Charger is the exact same as the one in the Magnum, which looks different on the outside. Likewise, the interior of the Commander is the exact same as the one in the Grand Cherokee except for some minor changes to accomodate the larger size and boxier design. Then, they took the Commander's design and shrunk it to form the Patriot. And they felt the need to rush out the Aspen, while just making minor tweaks to the Durango's interior to make it a little more "luxurious." And now, they take cookie cutter parts from their Caliber and cut and paste them into the Nitro and Compass. Seriously, make it a little less obvious. And get the interior plastics to a higher quality standard. The boxy gray designs of the interiors scream hard plastic.

#1 is correct; there's no imagination there. It looks like it would make a good staff car for the Wiermacht ... or they stole if from GM before it became the next Buick minivan. Looks heavy, slow and as if would push wind about as well as a UPS truck.

Wayne, God bless you. I hope you sell a million of them.

What happens when you through lots of new product into a category with insanely high profit margins? The margins come down. Chryslyer priced the Commander hoping for Tahoe like margins. Let the shakeout begin!

Regarding aesthetics, seeing it on the road, I'm not finding the Commander as awful as I thought. It's growing on me.

It would help if it weren't so darn ugly. I am truly disappointed in what is amounting to a bunch of slab-sided boxes on wheels that Chrysler is pouring out. There is little to no finesse in the designs. The Jeep Compass is going to be nearly as frightening to see on the roads as was the Aztek.

AND, if this isn't selling, just wait until the 'Chrysler 300 of SUVs', the Aspen, hits the showrooms. It isn't slab-sided, but it is pointless, kind of like the Commander.

I wish the Americans could come up with the right combination of size, style and quality. Instead it seems like we always only get one or two, but never three.
