Chrysler’s big debut at the New York Auto Show this year is the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which has been fully redesigned from the ground up. The new SUV is built on a proven rear-wheel-drive unibody platform sharing the same underpinnings as the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class.
The launch of the new Grand Cherokee marks the first application of company’s new, flexible fuel 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which features Variable-Valve Timing, 280 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm. Also available is a 5.7-liter HEMI V8, generating 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm. The HEMI features VVT and fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS) technology with dual exhaust to maximize efficiency.
Torsional stiffness is 146 percent more than the current Grand Cherokee and stiffer than the BMW X5 and Toyota Highlander, according to Chrysler. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system delivers off-road capability along with the new Selec-Terrain system that allows the driver to choose the drive system that best matches on- or off-road conditions. New front and rear independent suspension systems deliver better on-road handling and comfort, the company claims. Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.5 inches of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls.
The interior has been revamped with better materials and overall aesthetics. An available all-new CommandView dual-pane sun roof provides twice as much glass surface than a standard sun roof and extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle. The front panel can be opened rearward, providing additional light and fresh air to first-row passengers. The rear panel, which is fixed, allows light and open viewing for second-row passengers and comes standard with a power sun shade.
The vehicle’s 114.8-inch wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than the model it replaces and contributes to an overall vehicle length that is 1.8 inches longer than the prior model. The longer wheelbase creates more interior room and gives passengers an additional 4 inches of rear-seat knee and leg room. The vehicle also is 3 inches wider. The front doors have larger openings — by about two inches in height and width — while the rear doors open wider — 78 degrees versus 67 degrees — for improved access to the interior.
For added passenger comfort, rear seats recline 12 degrees. There’s also a 12-degree forward angle to allow 24 degrees of variation. Cargo volume behind the second-row has increased by 6.8 cubic feet, to 36.3 cubic feet total. An available fold-flat front-passenger seat provides even more cargo storage room. An all-new power rear liftgate is available, controlled via the key fob.
Seventeen-inch wheels are standard and deliver off-road capability, while optional 18-inch and 20-inch wheels can be ordered.
The standard “uconnect guardian” will automatically call emergency services in the event of an accident. Other features include remote door unlocking, roadside assistance, a stolen vehicle locator, and an “emergency call” feature.
Standard safety features include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with rough-road detection, and the four-wheel Brake Traction Control System (BTCS). Other safety features include full-length side-curtain air bags which extend protection to front and rear outboard passengers, seat-mounted side thorax air bags that enhance protection for the driver and front passenger and active head restraints which deploy in the event of a rear collision.
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee also features SIRIUS Travel Link, offering up-to-the minute information about gas prices, weather conditions, sports scores and movie listings. In addition, the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee features SIRIUS Traffic, which monitors traffic in 78 markets across the U.S.
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be built at the 2.7-million-square-foot Jefferson North Assembly Plant (JNAP) in Detroit, which has been the site of Grand Cherokee production since its introduction in 1992.

Mixed feelings. From the technology perspective, welcome to what Honda has been doing for a few years now (Cylinder shut-off and so forth). From the design perspective the outside is a mild refresh of the old one (but thats the way they roll, since the original every “new” one was simply an evolution of the old one, never a revolution). The interior is A LOT better than anything we’ve seen so far from Cry/Jeep/Dod. Yet, it still lags behind others in the class on that aspect, starting with the Tribecca, and even moving down the food chain to Pilot and FJ.

Honda? Uh, GM was one of the first with cylinder de-activation. Years before Honda had it.
Actually, if you count the weird 4-6-8 V-8 of the 1970’s Cadillac engine, GM has had cylinder deactivation technology DECADES before the rest of the industry.

I think they really wanted to keep the look of the Grand Cherokee. Why would they want to change something drastic when this vehicle sells alot. You really cant beat a Jeep. I think it looks awesome, and the HEMI engine gets amazing gas milage for 360hp, and adds alot of fun that no other competitive model even offers. Especually the Pontiac Aztek screwed a Jeep Wrangler and had a retard child looking Toytoa FJ, or the boring Pitlot.

Actually, now that I think back, Chrysler had cylinder de-activation on some of their Hemi’s years before Honda offered it on the Pilot.
And orangecones, you’ve got to be kidding with the interior comments. The Pilot’s interior is FUGLY (almost as bad looking as the exterior), and the FJ’s interior is almost a joke. The last GC blew both of those interiors away, and this new one’s is even nicer.
Stop listening to the media, get away from the television, use your brain and look – this Jeep is a nice vehicle. Case closed.

That’s almost too pretty to be a Jeep. If they keep the prices in line with the outgoing model it should be a winner.
orangecones, how can you even mention a non-entity like the Tribecca in the same breath as this? I don’t even need one hand to count the number of those I’ve seen on the road. And until you’ve had a chance to sit in the Jeep don’t make presumptions. I’m looking at the same pictures you are and this looks as nice as anything in its class.

As for the actual jeep, i love it. its sticking with the same overall design theme that’s proven to be successful for jeep & its GC. they’ve modernized it, added a little BMW to it (especially the rear), and made it new again. good job.

The taillights on a Grand Cherokee should NEVER venture onto the tailgate like they are on this. The rest looks good, but now the ass just looks like a tarted up Journey. If Jeep is going to switch this to a unibody construction they need to bring back a body-on-frame Cherokee to sit with the Wrangler. Yes this looks good, bravo Chrysler, but it isn’t Jeep.

nickkop- The Pheonix V6 is about 2 generations ahead of anything else on the market right now. If you read up on it you’ll discover that it’s actually designed to be used with both direct injection and camless technology. Mercedes is going to be using it in there vehicles as well but with the above options. The version that Chrysler is launching is to keep the costs in line for a mass market product, but as Mercedes starts doing some volume with the more advanced set up, you’ll start to see it pop up in the mainstream products from Chrysler. The Pheonix V6 is reported to be so refined it makes the Lexus look like it’s using a tractor engine.
As far as diesel – 3.0L CRD supplied from Mercedes and already being used. One of the cleanest and quitest diesel engines on the market today.
Fuel Cell – Not really sure that’s ever going to happen.

While Jeeps may have a few more nagging problems when new (covered under warranty) then some of the applpiance brands. Mercedes is going to be using the Pheonix architecture in there next gen V6″s, it’s just a fact not a guess. The 3.0L Diesel was standard issue on the ‘07 and ‘08 models, supplied from Mercedes, dropped only because of cost issues and emmision compliance. “To be the JEEP you have to beat the JEEP.”
I’m amazed at some many companies that try to meet or beat JEEP and fail. One one company can claim to be in Jeeps League and go figure it’s to only other company with a real military record as well, Land Rover. That is they actually made or still make vehicles for the military. MERCEDES BENZ and BMW make great road machines but when the road ends MB comes in a lagging third.
Now JEEP is going after Land Rover for Off-road Luxury? If nothing else, Jeep will beat Land Rover in Off-Road. The GC has always been Jeep’s stab at that All-terrain Luxury market. If CHRYSLER can stick it out long enough to make this work, and do it right, Not over produce because that market while strong is not bottomless, Then they have a real shot at long term survival and success.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a new GC SRT in the near future. Hint: Make it a high pressure Turbo Diesel. Just saw the Newest Jay Garage and that is some sick diesel tech. 1400 hp and can make six runs on one gallon. I’m sure there is more to it than that but still, can you imagine?
It would make CHRYSLER’s large cars much more desirable and scarier; 500hp, 800 lb/ft, and 40+mpg (and that’s being conservative).
CHRYSLER, because you have no other choice, BUILT IT AS IT AND BUILT NOW!
I wonder if INTERNATIONAL would be interested in buying HUMMER and/or JEEP?

I just want to feel like i can use this new model to help with the yard work and pull the horse trailer and not be afraid to get it a little dirty! Thats’ what a Jeep is for! Right?
Also hopefully the CRD WILL make its way back to the GC.. if you’ve driven one you will see why.. also let’s hope for a 6-speed tranny.. squeeze every mpg out! As for the new V-6, maybe soon Chrysler will also toss in a turbo or something!

The interior looks almost as inviting as the newly updated Range Rover, but for 1/2 the price. Nice work Chrysler, I hope you can keep the padlocks off the doors so you can sell this thing!!

Jeep is the most recognizable auto brand in the world, the most capable vehicle in the world. Consumer Reports is biased. I have owned 4 Jeeps in 10 years and never had (1) electrical problem. They have had MDS in their Hemi models since 2004. Thanks to Jim Press, they are finally attacking short comings. The next thing that they need to do is attack their powertains and get their transmissions up to speed with the rest of the world.
The Jeep GC is just the beginning. You will see a new 300C and a new Charger. The new Charger is a beast and looks fast sitting still. Both have considerably improved interiors. You will also see a (B Segment Car) smaller than a Caliber, very efficient. Avenger and Sebring will not see another refresh and will be replaced with a new and improved mid-sized sedan. Nitro goes bye-bye and the Compass is not far behind.
There is not a lot of separation between CJD – Honda – Toyota-Chevy- Ford. It is all perception and packaging. The auto media is mostly lazy and piggyback off of other people’s articles. So when you see a good or bad review on a car just know that very few of these writers do their homework. They rely on past history and what the other guy said.
Chrysler will make it. If not. Jeep definitely will. It is in high demand and is Chrysler’s bargaining chip.

Hmmm… a few old names, a lot of new names, yet the same overall level of ignorance. Yep… This must be LLN.
This new Grand Cherokee appears to be a great replacement for the current model. As far as the interior goes… Anyone who has anything even remotely negative to say about it is either delusional, needs to have their eyes checked, or are blatantly looking for and subsequently pulling things right out of their rear-ends. Chrysler has obviously learned their lesson with regard to interiors…
In response to such “learned” individuals as nickkop… It’s painfully clear we have yet another LLN commentator who loves to open their trap before doing even one iota of research on any given subject. Instead of just comfortable spewing your misconceived drivel… You might want to take your head out of your rear-end and actually do a little bit of reading up on the Phoenix-family of six-cylinder engines. It’s certainly not as if there hasn’t been more than enough written on the project over the last couple of years… So it must just be that you can’t be bothered to do so for whatever reason. Do yourself a favor and check it out… Then you might actually come across as something other than an ignorant, run of the mill fanboy for whatever hogwash you subscribe to.
With that said… As far as anyone else with their comments about this being “too late” because Chrysler won’t survive long enough for this new GC to come out – it’s definitely time for a big reality check…
Even if Chrysler does not survive (and that’s still a BIG “if”)… Under absolutely zero circumstances would that equate to Jeep somehow going under with it. Were Chrysler to go under, if nothing else… Jeep would be the top brand – if not the only brand to be salvaged from the company. There are more than enough potential companies that would be nothing less than thrilled at the prospect of acquiring Jeep – plain and simple.
