SEMA 2009: Jeep Lower Forty concept

11/03/2009, 7:57 PM

By Drew Johnson

Jeep has taken the wraps off its Lower Forty concept at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Based on the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep engineers have thoroughly reworked the Vegas concept, including the addition of 20-inch wheels and 5.7L HEMI V8 engine.

Based on an essentially stock Jeep Wrangler two-door, Jeep engineers whittled away large amounts of the Jeep’s sheet metal, allowing for the concept’s 40-inch tires without the use of a lift kit. However, custom fender flares 1-icnh wider and 4-inches higher than stock were required to fit the massive wheels and tires.

Other body mods include a custom made bikini top, a new rear tailgate complete with a stamped Jeep logo, carbon fiber hood with power bulge and a coat of Red Eye No. 3 paint. Jeep engineers also chopped the Wranglers windshield by three inches and added 10 degrees of rake.

Underhood, the Lower Forty concept sports a 5.7L HEMI V8, backed by a Getrag six-speed transmission. A Dana 44 axle is employed in front with a Dana 60 unit handling the rear axle duties, all fitted with 5.38 gears.

That is a pretty nice off roader. Much better thant he Wrangler. They should do this for the next generation Wrangler. I think the Wrangler is one of the vehicles getting facelifted in 2011.

Getting closer to making a Jeepster? Wheels and tires are a bit too big though. Like the limtied Rubicon edition, which became a regular trim level, this could be a Bad-@$$ variation that could become a regular variant if it works out.

Build it.

A4, take away the wheels and put in a more functional interior plus a few conventional tweaks and this would make a good design. You are quite the a$$.

So basically what you’re saying is turn it back into a regular Wrangler? Then what’s the ****ing point…?

A4, were you one of the SEMA contest winners?

No, if you take away the big wheels and apply safety standards, then the cool unique body will still be there. Of course, the interior would need to be downgraded and would look like the Wrangler’s, but better. NOTICE: the body quite defferent from the Wrangler.

The entire point of the body being different from the Wrangler is SOLELY so they can fit the massive 40-inch tires without forcing the use of a lift kit. They just hacked and sawed at a Wrangler until they could get the biggest tires to fit. Granted the tires look a bit outrageous, but that’s the point, ain’t it?
johnny – possibly ;)

Anyone else notice the Viper steering wheel? Mix and match parts much?

38′ inch tires would be more reasonable. There is no lift but did they improve the suspension over the base model. They just cut up a Jeep, shoved a large engine in it, put on large wheels and tires. Sounds like a muscle car.

iluvamcars: What do you think they should change about the interior?

A4, it also has a customized front fascia, rear fascia, and look at the door. the roof is also shorter. But yes, the overall body was made shorter to accomodate the big wheels.

QR25SpecV- not too much. Just a tone down really. Oh, and the steering wheel.

I don’t think that what iluvamcars is saying about this being an indication of an evolutionary design change is unreasonable. There are plenty of subtle alterations that would persist beyond removal of those 40″ swampers. However, I don’t think that any interior changes would be necessary–nothing there looks too outrageous.

My one gripe: what the heck is the point of a carbon fiber hood on a vehicle such as this? Wouldn’t fiberglass have been cheaper, more functional, and a bit less vain?

iluvamcars – the wheelbase is exactly the same as a 2-door wrangler. The doors are exactly the same, the fender flares have been beefed up which makes it look like the quarter panels are smaller – however they are not. The front fascia has had the stock bumper removed, and a bunch of metal hacked away from the grille area and the fender regions, so they could fit the 40 inch tires. The frame was not shortened, it may look that way because of the huge mass of the wheels, but it was not. The overall build of the wrangler is very much the same, they just took a saw to a bunch of the parts that might rub with the wheels and got them out of the way. They changed up the roll-bars so they have a first-gen YJ slope to them rather than the straight-up style from later models, and left it at that. They did the usual AEV style 5.7l Hemi conversion, stuck massive 40″ tires on it without any lift, and made sure they didn’t rub. That is the essential criteria for this Lower Forty setup. You are looking at form over function, however the point of this concept is to create form OUT OF function.

you two need to f*ck and get it over with…

i think the coolest mod here (not a fan of the overly-huge tires, but it’s sema, so w/e) is the raked and chopped front windshield…that element is balanced well by the angled rear part of the roll cage, too, making this a pretty sleek look for a wrangler (ignoring the tires)…

A4 @ 11/03, 8:47 PM,

Did you just put your brain in park when you posted that. Maybe you forgot that the WRANGLER RUBICON was the top off-road limited edition variant of the CJ for a year or two then became an additional Serious off-road version. A lot of the fancier “limited edition” bits were omitted but you still go the Suspension and drivetrain pluses.

This “Lower Forty” Version would be an awesome Limited Edition unit and if it works out a new performance package for the Venerable CJ. You would not get the all the “Limited Edition” bits again, but you could get the mechanical add-ons. Just downsize the tires to something actually usable.

Although I would rather JEEP, the only Division of CHRYSLER to not lose or was it gain market share, could maybe develop a full blown Dune/Baja buggy. But for now, just enjoy it.
