Early look: Jeep Renegade Concept

11/20/2007, 4:28 PM

By Drew Johnson

Chrysler has released its third — and final — sketch of a trio of concept vehicles that it will be debuting at this January’s Detroit Auto Show. The latest concept is the Jeep Renegade Concept, designed to be a rugged, yet eco friendly, B-segment-sized two-seat vehicle.

Jeep claims the Renegade Concept is capable of “off-roading and dune surfing” — complete with an interior that can be hosed clean — but its minimal use of materials and hybrid drivetrain should appeal to greener customers. Powering the Renegade Concept is a lithium-ion battery pack — with a 40 mile range — that can be recharged by a small, onboard BLUETEC diesel engine. The combined mileage of the hybrid system is said to be 110 mpg.

A speedster windshield and a roll bar also adds to the Renegade Concept’s sportiness.

The JT? Probably due out for 2010.

I wonder if this is the shape of Wranglers to come?

Ever notice how Jeep always has the same type of concept car and yet the Wranger continues to look exactly the same way it has for eons???

Bring back the friggin’ Cherokee!! Just slightly, slighty revise the exterior and give it an all-new quality interior.

I like the headlamps and grill of this concept. Hopefully that will reach the next Grand Cherokee.

I have to have “+” and “-” decals on my car! I wouldn’t want to plug my battery in the wrong way.

Somebody at Jeep has been playing too much Halo.

A couple full sized Warthogs were made for the upcoming HALO movie. They look really close. But so far no pictures of the suspension which is far and away differnet from anything out there.

There was also a couple of short films made but they Warthog was, I’m told, based on a Toyota Tacoma.

Either way, You’re right just add battle damage and a machine gun. Still looks cool. Let’s hope they make it.

When is someone gonna get off their ass and make a Warthog body kit for some jeep? Either for consumers, or some crazed fan with too much time and fabrication skill.

Honestly, people. That one is a no-brainer.

Have to agree with “Blakkarr”. Looks like they got their inspiration from Halo Series, nice though, but by far not Production ready, if they go according to the sketch.

Everytime I see something cool from Jeep I can’t help but wonder who signed off on that f*cking Compass.

johnnycanuck: probably some german d*ckhead when they were still in control of Chrysler. They’d never make a POS vehicle like that for Mercedes-Benz, that’s for damn sure.

It’ll never happen, Chrysler is sacking capable engineers and keeping the ticks in boxes engineers. Everything they do is ruled by cost, just look at how much the wrangler hard top leaks and how bad the sebring interior is. I’m told most of the people who work there are under the impression they are making quality vehicles?
Still when they close the detroit office it’ll give the mexican office something to do finally.

I just hope that if this concept is approved for production, it doesn’t follow the Compass handbook of morphing a cool concept car into a pathetic, brand damaging, production joke. Jeep has a little wiggle room to develop niche products within their tough, off-road capable brand perimeters if they properly execute the product. The production Compass is NOT an example of proper execution.

As far as the Renegade name, I think its use on this concept is appropriate. I know it has been used before, but I’ve seen the practice of reusing concept names employed by other companies. At least this name fits its respective concept much better than the Chrysler brand “ecoVoyager” concept.
