i linked an add to an '88 bronco on craigslist the other day...it has the 351 motor, which is only rated for 200 something horsepower, which seems puny these days, but you could pull a house down with that truck...hp ain't everything, especially with respect to truck motors...

My next door neighbor has a '93 wrangler with the 4.0, an 11" lift, and 42" tires...and his only complaint is that he wishes it had more power. This solves that problem for a lot of people interested in serious off-roading.

And yes, they could make a V8 with the same displacement, but that requires new mounts and reconfiguring the entire engine bay. By keeping the same inline-6 layout, Mopar kept the ease of installation as a re-built 4.0

Why do I get the feeling a lot of people on this site are not into the whole off roading thing. One of the best engines for offroading is the 4.0L inline 6 in a Jeep. The other good candidate for crawling through the mud is late 80's through 90's Toyota 4Runner. The stroker 4.7 may not have a lot in the way of horsepower but I bet it would put to shame a lot of small block v8's with the amount of Torque it has. I could see this motor making a nice sleeper out of a early 70's AMC Gremlin if you add some performance parts.

I, for one, think it is great that a manufacture is supporting a product that they didn't even produce. It shows that they are investing R&D money and that they plan to stick around for a while (or at least not just strip the company for parts and sell it off).

There are a billion old wranglers out there that you can pick up for $400 because they blew a rod or a piston. I hadn't even thought about Cherokees until this.

Love & Hate the doors at the same time, but the engine is what is important.

Too bad my GC already has a 4.7...
...with 2 extra cylinders and 35 more pound-feet. Wish I still owned a CJ or YJ.

those old 4L motors are known for being nearly indestructible (doing so is practically an accomplishment). i hope these dont turn into paper weights the first time you beat on them. but i guess for simplicity sake this makes sense- its less of a hassle than turbo/SC. heres hoping they work out.

reedfast, I think during its heyday the 4.0 put out about 180... so 265 isn't bad for something that began life when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.

I wish CHRYSLER would bring back the XJ are retire that girlie-mobile the Liberty. This and the WRANGLER epitomize exactly what JEEP is about. The GRAND CHEROKEE can still be the flagship, but the XJ is what it was about when it came to SUVs by JEEP.

Who knows maybe FIAT will force it back into production as the 4-door Wrangler with the hardtop May not be doing for buyers.

Why indeed, would a company that is headed for oblivion put together a concept vehicle based on a production vehicle that was retired in 2001, and was hopelessly obsolete when it was retired (having been essentially unchanged since its debut in 1984)?

Not hating on Cherokees here. I own one, and have owned two others. I love the little POS for just what it is - a little POS. It'll go anywhere thanks to its small size and capable 4WD system. I just think Chrysler should be concentrating on getting back to business...
