Jeremy Clarkson angers bus drivers

06/19/2006, 11:05 AM

By admin

Everyone’s favorite TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson is in hot water with bus drivers over in Britain after the TopGear presenter made some rather harsh comments toward the public transit workers. In a recent Sun article, he said any bus driver who fails to give cars the right of way is an “inconsiderate jumped-up little Hitler bastard” who should be “shot in the middle of his face.” Public transportation official Graham Stevenson said he’s not impressed by Clarkson’s comments. “Bus drivers have a sense of humour, but these comments are … deeply offensive,” he said. “Many of our members and their families have taken offence. Clarkson should apologize, but he should do more, in our view, he should spend a week as a bus driver.” Stevenson promised to organize a job swap if Clarkson is prepared to try driving a bus.

Here in Chicago, bus drivers take a backseat (tee hee) to cabbies. THEY are the worst drivers on the road. If only I had a bucket of golf balls in the passenger seat to heave at each one that cut me off….

The sweet thing about being a bus driver would be that no matter what your personal vehicle is, it would feel like an F1 car after driving a bus all day.

I’d love to see Clarkson take them up on the job swap.

Bus drivers suck. They do not even wait for cars to go buy, they just pull out. Rude and stupid. One of them helped guide a car into the path of my Triumph Rocket. Watched my low side, and then drove away. Such a professional. I hope she dies and burns in hell.

School buses are the worst. Pluggin up traffic all the name of protecting the children. “oh won’t someone think of the children.”

While I am ranting, lets talk about the worst menace on the roads. Bicyclists. They demand respect, yet they obey no traffic signals or signs. The always pick the best back roads to ride on. Slow obnoxious muthafarkers.

Hey Renton,

You really have no patience. You are in a car, and a rider is on a bike. You can’t just go around him and speed up? Or is pressing a pedal to complex for you? I bet you can drive in your car for 4 hours non-stop, without a problem. But, I want to see you bike non-stop for 4 hours…you wouldn’t make it.

Jon.

Got to hell, Renton. While I agree with you about school bus drivers, cyclists aren’t a menace. Heck, John Deere tractors on the road are probably worse. They’re slow as hell and take up the entire lane, if not the entire road. As a cyclist, I take up 2 ft and I demand half the lane as my own when you’re passing. Otherwise, you’re a jackass for taking my life into your own hands while you scream by in your fat-ass SUV. I race bikes and always obey the traffic signals and signs. You know why? ’cause it hurts like hell to get hit by a car. And yes, we pick the best back roads because that’s the whole friggin point of riding a bike!! And I sure as hell aren’t slow.

There should be harsher punishments for bus drivers that don’t respect signals or don’t have basic road education. They have double the responsability, they should have double the punishment.

Jon and 6ix, I guess you guys are the only good cyclists out there, cause let me tell you that many suck.

Nice to see you obey the signals. How about this, after I struggled to get by you in my S2000 not SUV ( because the opposing traffic was making a safe pass immpossible), you come and pass me on the shoulder when I am stopped at a traffic light. Then the whole lot of us have to do the same thing all over again. As a road vehicle, you are afforded the rights to a full lane. You are also not allowed to pass on the shoulder. Yet I have never witnessed a cyclist remain in his/her designated spot in traffic. They always move to the front of the line at a traffic light using the shoulder .

Many times I will be out for a nice drive, only to get stuck behind a group of cyclists that is impossible to pass safely. Most of the roads I drive on are very narrow. I don’t mind coming up to cyclist on my motorcycles though, it is easy to get by with those.

6ix,Thanks for telling me to go to hell. I’ll take an aisle seat please. Tractors are worse in that are not legal road vehicles, and they are slow, but they do not slow to 5mph when you hit a hill. Can’t pass on a hill

Jon, I could certainly ride a bike for 4 hours, but I might die of boredom.

Why all the cycle hate? I don’t know about Europe but here in the states (At least NJ) you don’t get a whole lane to yourself ( I wish it were so). I hate pricks who think that a bike is necessarily going so slow that they can cut in front of us and make right turns. Earth to many car drivers: Often a bike on a road is going over 20 MPH, close to 30 if there is a slight hill, would you cut in front of a vehicle doing that speed? I thought not.

Okay, Renton, accept my apology. I was a little harsh in my reply, but I’m pissed. We’re simply not going to agree on this, so it’s futile for me to keep stating my case. That said, i do agree that many recreational cyclists come off as complete dorks on the road. Kind of an embarrassment.

I’ve never gone 5mph on a hill. Never. 8 mph up Beech Mtn, but that’s about it. Heck, cars have a difficult time going up that sucker.

As for riding along the shoulder while waiting for a traffic light…yeah, I do that. But mainly because I hate getting pushed to the side when I sit behind a vehicle waiting for the light. Feels like a very bad spot to be in. What if the car behind me gets rear-ended? I’m cooked.

And as for cycling groups, I do agree they are hard to get around. Kinda spread out. I’m the one generally yelling at everyone to ride 2 x 2, as opposed to the whole friggin lane. I’m sure it’s annoying.

Four hours on the bike is nothing to laugh at. Try it at race speed, or in the mountains. You’ll have new respect for the superior athletes riding the professional grand Tours. It’s certainly not boring. And you see SO much more while riding a bike. if you’re trained properly, riding in the Colorado mountains can be an enlightening experience.

Ha.. I could probably not ride for more than 10 minutes in Colorado. When I said I could ride, I never said how fast. I ‘d be slow.

cyclists are a pain in the ass here just as anywhere. who said that cyclists deserve the road half as much as cars? they usually ride in the middle of the road and block traffic because they’re “in the zone”. not to mention that at 6:30 am they ride by with eachother and yell about how the doctor said its just warts to eachother. the real point of this is…bus driver need to burn in hell. bottom line. o and on their way there they should hit a few cyclists and drag them down too.

I ride near the line, maybe a foot or two to the left of it. The shoulder is strewn with debris, much of which would easily puncture my hand-sewn tubulars. I pay just as much in taxes for the road, what makes you (Money) think otherwise???

Main reason we ride in part of the lane is for visibility. I’m taking my own life into the hands of others (normally morons) when I ride. Have some freakin’ respect for fellow humans!! Jeesh, god forbid we slow you down for 2 seconds while you’re on your way to Hardees for your next Thickburger!!

And screw you Dave for even suggesting that bus drivers mow us down. Think for a second…we have families. We have people that care about us, probably a lot more than you care about your next hairclub for men meeting.

Trust me, I have a LOT of respect for cars. They hurt when they hit you (or you hit them.) And I follow the law just as much as any other driver. We all speed. We all fail to make complete stops at stop signs. That’s normal. But being a jerk and passing too close to a cyclist on the road is beyond reproach. You MUST not ever do this. It’s not like tail-gating another car because they’re going slower than you. If you’re driving a car, you can KILL a cyclist. Did you read that? Yes, KILL!! And I’m pretty sure you’re life is going to suck pretty hard-core if you hit and kill a cyclist for no real reason.

Hey dumbass, we don’t shave our legs for aerodynamics. It’s for crashing (you slide a lot better without hair and it doesn’t chew you up as bad,) cleaning up wounds and for massage.

Think before you speak next time. And if there is any question about cyclists’ sexual nature, take a quick look at the wives of pro riders. French podium girls, Italian models, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriters, etc. Should I go on?

I’ll rephrase my comment on there being enough room for all of us…there is enough room for smart, considerate people. That means you jokers can leave.

6ix, was I referring to you? Put your claws back in. I know that not all bicyclists are gay.

Women are attracted to $$$ and success. Wealthy, champion, professional cyclists will certainly get their share of tail.

Ever been to an F1 race? Now there is some fine pieces of arse at one of those.

My whole comment was just about how cyclists hold up traffic. They do. Period. Are you a car guy or a cyclist? You have to like one more than the other.

Yeah, been to the US Grand Prix in Indy a few times. Lots of little honies there, that’s for sure!!

Okay, I’ll agree with you about cyclists holding up traffic. I personally am as considerate as I can be with cars. I move over as much as I can, wave them through if I can see farther ahead up the road than they can, etc. Guess I’m one of the good ones. I’ve seen my fair share of bad ones too, and I don’t excuse them one bit. The statements coming from some of the posters are simply frustrating because they’re promoting bodily harm, if not death. I don’t take that lightly.

Hmm, a car guy or cyclist?? Both, I suppose. Love them both equally. Now go start training for that 4 hour ride (joking.)

I declare this war-thread over. That said, Clarkson should drive a bus for a week. That would be funny.

I havn’t read all the above comments but have browsed most and would just like to say that you are judging bus drivers by American standards. I have been a London bus driver for 18 years and have had two ‘not at fault’ accidents in all that time. I am a considerate driver but we do have a timetable to keep to and are not going to give way all day. I would love to carry a bus load of wingers in my bus on my way back to the depot at the end of the day. The car drivers are all in my way and drive too bloody slowly and erratically. BTW, I am (obviously) a car driver and can understand some of your points. Top Gear rocks and so does Clarkson but hey, do a week in my job and you’ll eat you words.

EVERY group has its bad apples. I am a commercial truck driver, and I’ve seen ‘em all. Are there bad bus drivers? Sure… but there are far more good ones. The only problem is, you usually only notice and remember the ones that foul up your day.

Four-wheeled vehicles can be just as obnoxious, dangerous, and deadly to us (commercial drivers in general), as we can be to you. I’ve had cars cut in front of me at highway speed so close that I couldn’t see their bumper over my hood (which has a pretty good down-slope to it). I’ve had cars behind me change lanes to pass, only to immediately get back over in front of me, then hit the brakes and make their turn. Or have the car in front of me change lanes, revealing someone right in front of them doing 55mph on the interstate (if you or your jalopy can’t do at least 65mph on a 70mph interstate, stay on the surface streets, lest your trunk space become GREATLY reduced).

Better yet… getting the horn and one-finger salute for getting stuck in the left lane. Here’s an example… truck coming on the interstate, so I change lanes left. This guy’s fairly fast… so he gets up to speed while still beside the rear of my truck, and he’s faster… though just barely. I’m doing 70mph in a 70mph, while a pickup comes up on my rear (tailgating… he was so close I could only see him by his shadow). At the rate I was being passed, it would’ve been 5 minutes before I could get back to the right, so I slow it down just a notch, to get behind the other truck, and clear the left lane. The guy behind me insisted on displaying his disgust at this with noises and gestures… even though I saved him several minutes by getting over sooner. I’m sure he would have preferred I step on it, and get in front of the truck that just merged in, but I’ll let you guys in on a secret… MOST OF US HAVE GOVERNORS!!! Stop getting ticked off because we don’t step on it… as most of us *CAN’T* go any faster.

The best example of four-wheeled stupidity… I was in the middle of three lanes, when the guy in front of me realized that THIS was his exit… as he slammed on brakes. He was down to 35mph (on a 70mph interstate) before the right lane was clear enough for him to shoot over, at the last minute, and off the exit. Despite the distance I kept before his little stunt, it took everything I had not to hit him (with nowhere to go, as the left lane of the three was full of traffic as well). For future reference… just go down to the next exit, and turn around.

Next… if you’re in a pickup truck, pulling a trailer of some sort (boat, U-haul, etc), and it starts fishtailing (swinging back and forth) every time you get above 60mph… you either need to get a truck with a better tow package, or you need to stay off the interstates.

Next… if a truck on the interstate changes lanes to the left, for no apparent reason, you may want to open your eyes, pull away the cellphone glued to your head, and look down the road (INCLUDING the shoulder) a little bit, rather than instantly pass on the right. I don’t know about you… but I’d rather not hit a cop who trips while writing a ticket, or the guy trying to pull a tire off his car, when it suddenly jars loose.

If a truck is in the left lane passing a slower vehicle, and puts his right signal on… how about letting him get over (and out of your way), instead of cutting over and passing him on the right the instant you’ve got the 2 feet in front, and 2 feet behind you think is safe to make a lane change.

Finally… the people who’s gas pedals get stuck, and they go careening into a building, or a crowd full of people. Why is it that this only seems to happen to the blue-hair crowd? I smell a Detroit conspiracy… or maybe (occam’s razor) current or former octogenarians are just more likely to confuse the brake and gas pedals. I’m just saying… maybe we ought to require road tests when you renew your license, for those who qualify for SSI.
