With rising fuel prices and growing environmental concerns, most automakers are beginning to offer more compact cars, smaller engines, and crossover SUVs that are more like wagons and less like trucks. One segment that hasn’t seen too much downsizing so far is the pickup truck market. But that might be about to change, says Chrysler’s Jim Press.
Earlier this month at a roundtable meeting with journalists, Mr. Press said he sees an emerging market for “very small, very fuel efficient” pickups, according to PickupTruck.com.
Press joined Chrysler in September 2007, after working for 37 years at Toyota. His former employer used the Detroit auto show this year to roll out the small A-BAT concept truck, while American automakers were busy launching their largest trucks — the 2009 Dodge Ram and 2009 Ford F-150.
In recent years, we can think of only one compact pickup from a Chrysler brand — the Dodge M80 Concept (pictured). If Mr. Press gets his way, might we see a vehicle like this produced in the coming years?
With Generals Motors expected to reveal a car-based GMC pickup concept early next month and an El Camino-like Pontiac model in March, we think Mr. Press is probably on to something.

No kidding, where did all the Ford Courier sized pickups go anyway? Not everybody needs a 3/4 ton crew cab dually.

This is a great opportunity for Ford to roll out the re-engineered/re-designed NEW F-100 (Ranger) with a diesel and a six speed tranny. This way they could get 200k plus more sales a year, not bastardize the F150/Superduty segment, and add F-series sales to the “advertised number”. I just hope they don’t kill the Ranger. Well its a great idea…..Ford probably won’t do it.

Hello? I’ve been saying this for YEARS. Now that gas prices are high, and the green-weenies are gaining traction, we’ll see an actual compact pickup! Chrysler really should have made that M80 pictured here. C’mon, someone please make something to replace my loved Chevy (isuzu) LUV!! Still going strong at 20yrs old, and gets almost 30mpg hwy…no reason that someone couldn’t make a decent replacement for all those old Toyota & Nissan pickup owners. The newer ones are just too big and too inefficient. Just make something that will haul large objects in the bed, and make it light and efficient. All the delivery, landscapers, pool guys, utility companies, forest services, construction/contractor guys, Home Depot nerds will LOVE you for it!

I guess some body wake up at Chrysler. And hey Ford quit making the Ranger bigger make it smaller, likewise Toyota where is the little Tacoma, the new ones are getting fatter, Nissan your Titan ain’t doing that well, where is the little pick up truck from the 90’s, GM where is the S10 why buy a Colorado might as well buy the 1500 Silverado. And since Chrysler woke up I don’t need to tell them about the Dakota.

All the truck makers need to get on board ASAP.
But if they want to sell them in large quantities make them good looking, offer some with 4 doors AND offer long beds that can actually haul stuff.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Toyota made a smaller Tacoma and called it the Taco.
Sounds like a plan.
The A-Bat by Toyota was only the length of a Rav4, so Toyota sees the potential.
First come….

Chrysler sees market for a lot of thing, but does the market see Chrysler? Lately, the brand is pretty invisible to me!

Being the pick-up truck capital of the world, I’m surprised that the compact pick-up segment was abandoned in the first place. Dakota was always a midsizer, Frontier and Tacoma grew out of the market, and the Ranger was left for dead.
With the CHEAPEST of trucks (desirable, not bare bones) coming in around 20k, there is prime real-estate for a compact truck between 14-20. It’s as much a no-brainer as you could get.
I saw RAMBO this weekend…Forget what most critics are saying…it kicked ass. Better than most other movies I’ve seen this past year. In my opinion, much better than THERE WILL BE BLOOD, which is up for a ton of awards.
If you like Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, or Blackhawk Down, you’ll like RAMBO.

Heh, maybe they could release a “RAMBO” edition M80 pickup? I like it, it’s a departure away from the “Freightliner” styling of the mid ’90s that’s carried on to today. Don’t get me wrong, I like the lines of those trucks (after all, I own a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500), but now they’re just bulbous and ugly, IMO. It’s time for change.
Seriously, though, it looks like they’re waking up and realizing what the market had 25 years ago - a good selection of compact trucks, some even offered with diesel engines (are we listening, Chrysler?)
I was (and still am) fed up with the way Daimler-Benz ran the Chrysler Corporation. They cut spending costs on EVERYTHING in the Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler line and they KILLED PLYMOUTH. It cheapened everything to the point that the Chrysler vehicles became some of the least reliable vehicles on the market - and have the lowest resale value.
Hopefully, Cerebrus can steer the Chrysler corporation in the right direction - and it looks like they’ll succeed, so long as they follow through on their concepts, like this truck. Limit production on the Challenger, and focus on vehicles like the ZEO and the M80, and Dodge will be steered straight for the future.

Ironhide, if it weren’t for pick-ups none of us would have a damn house to live in. My father uses his truck to haul 15,000lb loads of construction material all the time. If possible, try to think once in a while, it helps.
Anyway, about the mini trucks, bring back the Chevy Luv!
