Karmann back in business?

07/08/2009, 6:55 PM

By Drew Johnson

Just days after closing up shop, Karmann — the Osnabrueck, Germany-based coachbuilder best known for the Karmann Ghia – could be set for a comeback. Karmann has reported inked a model development deal with Volkswagen worth at least $14 million.

According to the Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung newspaper, VW’s contract will be enough to bring Karmann back from the brink. Karmann’s business had been on the decline for the last several months, forcing the company to file for bankruptcy in April and to shut down its business entirely in June.

Although details remain scarce, the newspaper claims the new contract will be for the development of electric vehicles. The $14 million contract will provide enough work for Karmann to rehire about 1,600 workers. When Karmann closed its doors on June 23rd, it had 2,240 employees.

someone didn’t do their math. 1,600 workers at $40K is $64M. $14M will only see you through about 3 months on payroll alone.

Depending on how they do this and if they offer a higher end performance package this thing could see. It even could give the Mazda Miata a run for it’s money if done right. If they price to high and no performance then forget it
