Damn, I’ve gone that fast on the ground before! Well, almost on the ground.

I went 432 km/h, or 268 mph (the article says “approaching 270mph” and 268 is definitely approaching 270mph) on the Shanghai Transrapid, which is a maglev train. I’ve been on fast trains before, like the TGV in France or the Shinkansen (bullet train) in Japan, but this thing was hella scary fast!

I was actually scared looking out the windows … and really excited at the same time. Good thing the maglev was built with international (largely German) technology and oversight. Otherwise I’d never risk my life on a “made in China” deathtrap.

I just care about Bugatti and McLarens. Not Keating.
After all, Bugatti IS the real HyperSports Car. It hits 250 mph while you’re immersed in a luxury sports vehicle, not in a brick hard seat between all those sticks and buttons to ignore.
Another thing Bugatti kicks ass… Quality.

This thing is never going to run right – the GM engine is going to suffer from Porsche disease being attached to a Porsche transmission. LOL

Actually, this mating of GM engines and Porsche transmissions is done often among 911 track guys who replace the expensive and not-so-durable Porsche flat-six with a Chevy small block V-8. The Chevy small block V-8 lasts longer under track duty, and when it finally does blow, it only costs $7k for a new one, versus $20k for a new Porsche motor.

Generally, Jet engines are not, to my knowledge, as efficient as an ICE for normal daily driving. Race driving is a different story entirely. I think some headway was made to that end but nothing you could find at Jay’s Garage.

But if the game is to go 300 mph, then a Jet engine is your best bet…. If only to run the 3000kw generator to run the electric motors that would push the car to that speed.

BTW, just as a reference the new CAFE, as if this car was ever meant to comply, is 35MPG by 2020.

Blakkar: I don’t have anything against jet-engines, but I’m not sure if it’ll be as efficient as an ICE. You know, if we have to make the 35 MPG goal by 2025 (or whatever magic number they come up with by then), we’ll need every last trick in the book to pull this off. I feel bad for all of us car enthusiasts, the farther we head into the future the more castrated our vehicles become. Pretty soon taking control of a car and actually driving it (and enjoying the drive) will be a thing of the past.

If horsepower is all that matters, then just strap in a top fuel drag racing engine.

Good for 5000+ horsepower.

0-300+ MPH in under a quarter mile.

An insane “blat” that can broke car windows and make deaf men hear again.

What would be wrong with a jet engine. Engineers have already said at least a half dozen times over the last ten years, that if you are ever going to build a 300+ MPH sports car you will need a jet engine.

I’m still waiting for Jay Leno’s ECOJET to run some hot laps. Sadly the car is not yet finished.

Wow…it’s frigging awesome that they’ve pushed the speed limit, but I’m afraid it won’t be long before they have to substitute an ICE for a turbine or some other jet-engine/turbofan type design.

Looks better than the last incarnation, way better. Well, I’ll reserve my comment until more pics arrive. Original? Not really looks like a S7, McLaren and many other longtail styles. The 5 Speed trans is an interesting choice. It might because the engine is producing so much torque, there are not many choices of transmissions. Must have really long gears or else how would it get to 270mph?

It does not have gobbles of horsepower for the segment (404?) but it must be light and maneuverable like Lotus. Interesting choice of engines: they’ve got to be pushrods.

Ignore shaver’s flame-starting comment please. Anyway this is an interesting car to say the least; the body shape looks like an S7 with some S5S Raptor elements up front and the sides and quarters are slightly reminiscent of a Carrera GT with those large mouthed intakes. The top speed goal for this car is borderline crazy and I am not sure how they intend to pull off that top speed with a wing considering the Veyron’s spoiler has to be lowered to reach the high speeds and the Ultimate Aero TT has no spoiler at all merely a lip. The 5 speed gearbox also sounds quite stone aged to the 7 speed Veyron but with 1500 turbo horsepower they would be able to make the gearing for transmission ultra-wide and still have a decent powerband so long as they tune the turbos correctly (one for low rpm and one for high). This car is definitely going to be a beast I would not expect it to be civilized at all nor have any sort of interior work, its a purpose built car plain and simple.
