Ken Block reportedly teaming up with Ford to join WRC

10/15/2009, 4:53 PM

By Mark Kleis

The widely known driver and internet phenom Ken Block is stepping out of his Subaru and into a Ford to start a career in the World Rally Championship. This partnership will provide an opportunity for the WRC to tap into a fan base practically non-existent in America.

Ken Block is best known for his YouTube sensation series, “Gymkhana,” performing outrageous stunts complete with explosions and test dummies in his Subaru Impreza.

Unfortunately for Subaru’s marketing department, Subaru will not being competing in the WRC – forcing Block to find a new sponsor. It appears as if the Ford and Monster Energy WRC team will play host to not only Block, but another former Subaru driver Chris Atkinson.

What many YouTubers may not know is that Ken Block has also been racing in the Rally America series, which suffers from a small fan base and minimal exposure. Block will need every bit of experience he has accumulated in the Rally America series as he steps up to the world stage with the WRC, but more importantly, Block and the WRC can only hope that his presence will help to bring WRC into more TV sets across America. It is this opportunity that just might make this the single most important signing in WRC history.

At this time both Block and Atkinson are expected to begin their rookie season in WRC racing in a 2009-spec Ford Focus, with a possibility for a shift into a WRC Fiesta in the near future. Given the success of the rally style Fiesta at the X-games, this move could be another great publicity opportunity for the Fiesta as it too will be selling on the world stage as Ford’s most recent, and arguably most important attempt at a true world car.

Read about this a couple hours ago, and I still have mixed feelings about it. It was nice having Ken as that “rockstar” in Rally America, and the series will probably suffer slightly due to loss. On the other hand it will be good to see a driver representing the US internationally. I doubt it will increase US interest in WRC (unfortunately), b/c rally fans who know Block already watch WRC. All I can say, is it’s great to finally be able to watch WRC in the US. The last two Sundays have been great watching WRC on HD Theater. In my opinion, rally racing is the best motorsport to watch on TV. Of course with just two manufacturers this year, WRC is definitely hurting…

^^^ I should have said “watch WRC again”. SPEED dropping WRC coverage a few years ago was a real drag…

SPEED sucks, it should really be called NASCAR TV. I liked it better when it was speedvision.

It’s a shame that the Ford he will probably use won’t be sold in the U.S.
at least not anywhere close to what is being shown, unlike the Impreza.

I’ve got pretty good confidence in this guy. Partially because I personally think he will impress even his die-hard fans simply for the fact that he’ll be working with the best team he’s had yet. I wonder whom they’ll partner him up with? Anyway, my man Sebastian Loeb will certanly test his reflexes. However, putting America in the podium more often might just bring some WRC fanfare to this country. Therefore I say Go-Block-Go!!. Oh, BTW I had an ex-girlfriend whom is related to this guy. I got to meet him when he was alot younger.

Yeah awesome video andy, not too sure what the hell the point of Dyrdek’s part was but all the high-speed camera slo-mo’s were great.

Still don’t know why Subaru dropped out of the WRC… Unless it’s money? I hear they are a little cash poor.

Someone please feel free to shoot me down in flames because I admit I haven’t watched that much WRC… but I’ve always had a problem with the fact that they’re not actually racing anybody. Do you know what I mean? They’re out there all by themselves and yes their driving skills are incredible but they’re racing the clock and not the guy beside them. I realize the nature of the ‘track’ likely precludes that possibility but on TV at least… well, it’s just f*cking boring.

Sorry, but I’d rather watch the rednecks turning left for 500 miles.

A4- You often have valuable things to add to a discussion, so it is a shame you would add personal attacks at all, never mind completely unprovoked. It really detracts from what you are actually saying, and from your reputation on the site. Also, please try to condense your thoughts into one post at a time, it is annoying enough that you own half this thread, but that you do it three posts at a time is just a waste.

Back To Subject- I didn’t realize that was a crash dummy in the thumbnail until I read the article and looked closely :) This could be good for American manufacturers, and good for us as their consumers.

I’ve always wanted to watch a rally race live. Ideally in Europe of South America where you can stand right by the side of the track.

Epic! This is one piece of many recent big announcements for WRC and US rally fan. The sport is about to blow up.
By 2011 season WRC will be back to 4-5 manufacturers(now=2) and 10-12 good seats(now=4). Pastrana shoud be there by then as well.
New S2000+ cars will be more evenly matched.
New WRC dedicated game will be out in 2010.
New promoter has promised to bring back quality of coverage (more cameras, heli-cameras, in-cars).
This sports format is not the best for TV, but its perfect for the internet.

Next week is Rally GB, final round of 2009, it will be amazing. Basically there is a tie in the drivers championship, winner of the rally will take the whole championship.

Those who even mention WRC in same breath as the Left Hand Turn Circuit, need a lobotomy. They race on real roads, in real cars, tarmac, dirt, fog, rain, dust, animals, trees, cliffs. They do 120 through the forest on snow for christ sakes. The safety areas are walled by humans!

I used to enjoy watching WRC but it sort of went away from SPEED…this discussion caused me to go to the WRC homepage and there’s a video showing the driver and navigator in a Ford racing like mad…for as many times as you see these guys drive off cliffs and striking trees, you’d think that full face helmets would be in order…yet, you’d be wrong.

Wish the US was a bigger piece of WRC.

There are rare moments in WRC where the drivers eventually race neck and neck. Mostly due to the driver that launched ahead of the other competing driver having electrical issues. And on some occasions involving ditches. Anyhow those moments are fun to watch.

More motorsports on TV is good…hopefully a network picks up some F1, so we can see the new American team – even if they are dead last.

Johnny, you can watch nascar for more than one lap? Its like watching a ceiling fan. I already know where its gonna go.

I will watch the occasional nascar road event…but circle track racing to me is like golf – its really only interesting when you’re doing it.

floor_it, I’m watching the Nationwide from Charlotte right now… and, yeah, I can. I think it’s because I’ve been watching it for so long it’s almost kind of like ‘my story’. The cars themselves became boring long ago but there are some great characters. And I know he doesn’t do WRC but if one guy could it would be Robby Gordon so he’s kind of my guy. Well, him and anyone who drives a beer car.

Lol… Too bad Ken is going out there while Sebastian Loeb is still kicking around… That man is GOD in this motorsport… People will watch and cheer on Ken then realize the frenchman just steals the show and eventually people will stop watching again.
