Kia is taking Hyundai ’s lead in a bid to move the brand up-level, and will continue that ascension at this week’s Los Angeles Auto Show. The Korean automaker plans to show a hydrogen-powered version of its Borrego SUV, dubbed the Borrego Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV).
Kia claims the fuel cell system used in the Borrego SUV is 44 percent more powerful and 62 percent more efficient that its previous fuel cell drivetrain. Moreover, Kia’s system can work in extreme cold, with operation possible all the way down to -30 degrees Celsius.
The Borrego FCEV’s fuel cell system puts out 154 horsepower and is said to offer a range of 426 miles. The Borrego FCEV also uses lithium-ion batteries.
Kia says it plans to start fleet testing the Borrego FCEV by 2010, but it remains unclear where those test will take place.
