Following the release of official production sketches earlier this year, Kia has officially taken the wraps off the production version of its VG sedan. Set to go on sale later this year in Korea, the VG will replace the Opirus and Amanti models worldwide. Korean sales will begin later this year with North American sales following in spring of 2010.
Officially dubbed the Kia Cadenza — at least for markets outside of Korea — the new sedan is the production version of the KND-5 show car. Developed under the codename KND-5, the luxury sedan will stand as Kia’s flagship sedan.
The car rides on the same front-wheel-drive platform as the Hyundai Azera, known as the “NF” chassis. Powering this new sporty sedan will be Hyundai’s Theta four-cylinder mill, although a V6 engine hasn’t been completely ruled out.
Despite what has been suggested by some media reports, the Cadenza is not necessarily a replacement to the aging Amanti flagship sedan. A larger model — codenamed “CH” — has been rumored to be the Amanit’s successor, although the Cadenza could still fill that role.
It remains unclear exactly what price point the VG will hit, but Kia is likely eyeing the coveted, yet crowded, volume mid-size sedan segment. However, it will be priced somewhere below the Amanti, which starts around $26,000 in the United States.
The front of the car sports Kia’s family-look grille which is “based on a symbolic representation of a tiger’s roaring countenance,” the company says. Overall the Cadenza strongly resembles its show car counterpart, although some features — such as the concept’s 20-inch wheels — look to have been toned down for production.
The Kia Cadenza will start its auto show tour in the Middle East, but should make an appearance at an upcoming U.S. show.

I like the looks of this car a lot more than the new Sonata (or the Accord or Camry or Malibu or Mazda6), but that name Cadenza sucks. I know naming a car must be difficult, but a quick trip to Urban Dictionary yields better options:
….. the Kia Katrina
….. the Kia Cannibus
….. the Kia Kornhole
….. the Kia Cameltoe
….. the Kia Coochie, or
….. the Kia Creampie
Personally, I’d rather be driving a Creampie than a Cadenza. Just sayin’

These are respectable cars. The fact of the matter is , and this will probably happen in China as well, is that someday The Korean’s are going to realize what Unions did for Americans. I’m asuming the process would start through Kia. Hyundai, still government owned and run, is parent company to Kia. Therin lies the weakness. The loopholes are already there for the lawyers and I belive Hyundai would scab not long following Kia. This may seem like I’m talking in a negative manner, and for you pro-union guys I’m merely speaking of facts, but I’m a car guy and I like Hyundai’s approach. I’m a huge BMW fan and the Genesis just feeds-the-need. It’s really a matter of time greed will show face. Fear, the object that drives our every action, will constitute the need for employees to feel the need for more and more security. Even if Hyundai remains as faithful as possible. Its just as car guys, we will see the unions actions reflected within Hyundai’s build quality. Then the haters will actually have something to type about. I believe South Korean’s have every right to be as industrial as we do. I just hope thier good ideas keep coming here in the near future, rather than later.

After reading the not too flattering article about the dodge avenger, it makes me wonder even more why anyone would buy that knowing for the same money you can get this very attractive sedan which will have a 6 speed auto unlike the prehistoric 4speed in the avenger.

To leftwingagenda: Oh, that I read in a Car and Driver issue of mine back from 2006. I looked through my collection before I stated my post. Part of Korea is communist the other I really couldn’t define it well enough yet but I’m also curious as to how exactly that comes to be. Now I’m much more curious, thanks. Lol. America does provide security. BTW.

I think Kia tried to disguise the cars they copied in this one a little better than in previous recent models. The Audi influence is very obvious however. I see some Chevy Malibu and Ford Fusion and dare I say a tinge of Nissan Altima, all in the front alone.

Um, Korea is a heavily industrialized country that produces a lot of just about everything. And the unions who build these cars are much more militant than any you’d see here – over there they riot and march through tear gas on a regular basis.

I love it when a manufacturer debuts a car there’s always people that will comment on how a design was copied from another company. What else are you suppose to do? You have to put a light, a grille, 4 wheels, windows, etc. Of course you’re gonna end up with a similar look here and there. Try drawing a persons face and I guarantee you the eyes, ears, nose, etc will look like somebody I’ve seen before! Stop the hate.. lol

The concept version of the Cadenza (the VG) were revealed PRIOR to the Insignia and the headlights of the Chrysler 200C concept are very similar to what was on the Genesis concept (also the headlights take a big cue from the Kia Kee concept from 2007).

Need more oil for Volkswagen?? Hey waitaminute. Weren’t you a GM fan at first? Ok see. This is not fair. Now I can’t argue with you anymore because Im a huge fan of VW. And as for Kia’s quality, my father has a 2002 Sedona and I had a 96 Accent. Those cars never gave me any trouble. As oppose to the piece of sh*t cars we had from GM i.e. 88 Buick Century that needed a new transmission, 3 new alternators, and a new distributor. Oh. and our 94 caravan purchased new at the time went through 8, I repeat EIGHT fuel pumps, not exagerating, a new radiator, new power steering pump, new head gasket, a transmission that occasionally wouldn’t get into gear, a driverside power window that got stuck occasionally, a sliding door lock that stuck too, very safe in an accident, and after only three years of owning it it would stall out of the blue in the highway. And then it would start out of nowhere. Our neighbor had the same car and the same problems some different. And not just the caravan. A buddy of mine has a Sebring which also needed a tranny replacement after 4 years the car rolled off the assembly line. Meanwhile our Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, and Suzuki? Not a problem. The oxygen sensor on our Pathfinder at most. I made an oath not to EVER go near anything built from GM or Chrysler ever again.
