Kia's first truly upmarket offering - the full-size K9 luxury sedan - has just gone on sale in South Korea.

The Mercedes S-Class-sized K9 shares a rear-wheel-drive platform with the Hyundai Genesis and draws stylistic inspiration from the well-received GT concept car. Engine choices include two different 3.8-liter V6s making 286 and 330 horsepower, while shifting duties are handled by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Standard kit includes upscale features such as LED headlamps, blind spot detection, a lane-departure warning system, a 17-speaker stereo and an around-view monitor system (AVM) with four cameras.

"K9 is a clear signal of our intention and determination to compete head-to-head with the European luxury brands. And for Kia, our customers, and for me - this car is like a dream come true," said Peter Schreyer, chief designer of the K9.

For now, Kia is confining the K9 nameplate in Korea, but the automaker also said there will be other names for undisclosed global markets when the car is eventually produced for non-domestic consumption - but the automaker stopped short of revealing those markets or other possible model names.

Will the K9 head to the United States? It is hard to say given the relatively low sales volume of the Hyundai Genesis Sedan with which this sedan would directly compete, but at the same time it could be a logical move if the Kia wants to continue its march upmarket.
