2010 Kia Rio facelift images surface online

07/20/2009, 10:16 AM

By Nick Aziz

Images of a refreshed version of the Kia Rio sedan have surfaced online, revealing a number of changes to the car’s exterior. The 2010 model — which will go on sale in Korea this summer and in America this fall — has a new front end and a number of other aesthetic improvements.

The headlight shape is largely the same, but a more angular grille and a large trapezoidal air intake give the car a decidedly more modern appearance. The new fog lights also feature sharper edges, giving the front of the car a more cohesive appearance.

Critically, the car will now be available with color-matched body cladding. While the current model is only available with black plastic cladding, the facelifted Rio will be offered with painted trim.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any information on mechanical changes, nor are there pictures of the rear end. The interior will reportedly include a revised center stack, a new steering wheel, more stylish gauges, a better sound system, and Bluetooth connectivity.

When you compare this to what an entry level car was like say 15 years ago in terms of features, safety and emissions it’s quite a bargain. Problem is when you go to resell it you’ll wish you’d bought the Honda, but even that’s improving.

It is a nice looking small sedan. Nothing pretentious, just clean lines and features. But value, I am not si sure.

4ever – I would hope that anyone looking to buy one of these would instead consider a 2-year old Civic or something else instead. Nothing against Kia (their Forte and Soul are not bad at all), but the RIO is a dawg. I got stuck with one as a rental when there was nothing else available (but an Aveo). The RIO had wind up windows and the crank came off in my hand as I was exiting the lot.

So true Johnny, so true. Problem is there is no Honda that is near this price, even the Fit is 3-4 thousand more and they don’t offer Kia’s incentives.

Actually, I like renting these instead of cars like the G6/Cobalt and Corolla(which are filling up our rental lots) just because you’re not buying the car, you’re renting it, so I like the MPGs this one offers.

now you got me on the 2 year old civic cuz i would do the same its just people gotta give hyundai/kia the time to be the NEXT honda or toyota because when honda and toyota came over here my dad said that honda ( a company that makes lawnmowers ) was the laughing stock of GM and look at honda now, so maybe kia hyundai will do the same . eventually the rio will be discontinued to spruce up the kia lineup. same with the accent i believe. Hyundai already said “OK enough with this here’s our genesis” a great car that is giving the top dogs a hard time LOL kia will eventually be a import tuner company like honda and toyota use to be -more like a scion competitor

The few times that I was stuck with Kia as a rental, I was totally disgusted. I did not drive the latest edition, but models before were worse then Soviet era cars I sampled in Canada in 80’s (Johnny have you tested Lada?)

What are you talking about Borat? Lada made some very fine automobiles, heck I even went to prom in a Lada Limo…

Why Borat yes indeed I have. I don’t want to say I came dangerously close to buying a Lada Niva 4X4 at one point but if the buzz hadn’t worn off halfway through the test drive there’s no telling what might have transpired.

Looks like a 2 year old USDM Focus sedan with a current gen Ford lower grill. It is far and away better than previous Kia designs, but not exactly Earth shattering. But these aren’t enthusiast cars, in fact, far from it. These are cars for people who’s only other option is a used car, but want that new car smell and warranty. For people in that market, the styling is probably a home run.

Have you ever smelled the interior of a new Korean car? That kind of new car smell I can definitely live without.
