Kia launches Soulster concept

01/11/2009, 5:23 PM

By Drew Johnson

Kia unveiled its new Soul crossover/tall wagon at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, and followed up that debut with a two-door concept variant at the Detroit Auto Show. Dubbed the Soulster, the concept shows what an open-air Soul might look like.

Kia touted the concept as “more than just a re-packaging treatment”, and the Soulster definitely delivers on that promise. In addition to just shedding two doors, the Soulster has also ditched its fixed hardtop — giving the Soul a true open air feeling. In fact, the Soulster is reminiscent of Suzuki’s popular Samurai 4X4 model.

The Soulster’s interior is far more futuristic than its production counterpart, but keeps with the Soul’s affordable theme — the concept’s windows, gear box and canvas top are all manual. Rear seats fold dow to offer even more cargo space.

If the concept does make production, it will likely be touted as a sporty urban vehicle with a low price point — not unlike a Mini Cooper. However, there is no indication if the concept is meant to preview an eventual production model.

looks like Korean crap trying to look like Japanese puke. alright i’m just kidding it’s pretty decent looking, but i cant stop thinking of the Suzuki Sidekick or Isuzu Amigo, as someone stated here already.

It looks kind of like a toy. Not too bad overall.

Bolex, I’d be guessing they’re betting on people remembering the Sideflip or the Amigo. Suzuki, particularly, was foolish to abandon a niche they really had all to themselves. There are still thousands of Sidekicks/Vitaras/Trackers/Sunrunners everywhere and people want pretty steep coin for well preserved examples. The mistake they made with the 2nd generation was softening the lines to the point where they lost the character of the original. To be honest I would rather this Soulster be a Suzuki product but I’d still be willing to take a chance.

It’s too small to be utilitarian.

Sideflip..lol man, i remember that whole fiasco..consumer reports pretty much killed sales for them. i’m not sure if suzuki ever realized they had a niche, and i also noticed resale held up pretty good because i wanted to buy one a few years back.

More interesting than the car, better looking than a Tracker. Roof looks problematic

I usually don’t get involved in assigning genders to vehicles, but in this case I’ll make an exception. There are only 2 words that appropriately describe this toy: “Chick Truck”.

Fun, unique little vehicle. I’d take this “chick truck” over a “man’s” H2 or whatever else real “men” drive. Other than the RX8, does Mazda make a hairy-knuckled “man’s” vehicle Mazdaman?

the only manly looking part on this is the headlights. Am I the only one who thinks it looks dumb? I can see the use for it, but I wouldn’t want to be caught driving it, especially if they make it and make it look even more girly with the production looks.
Gundy, check out the Furai, or any of their other concepts, and I have seen more women driving H2’s than men…

Dammit! Use bars! I will buy one of these and rip those plastic hockey sticks off the back, attach a proper looking rollbar, and then deliver it back to Kia, with a note saying “PLEEEEASE!”

This is such a great idea, and the rest of it looks really cool, but the angle of the bars is too steep (make them squarer) and the fact that they aren’t even bars at all is a dealbreaker. Look at the old school Scion bB from Japan, it was no off roader in any sense of the word. I’m sure this isn’t either but the bars looked so much better on the bB.

Also- completely sweet rear end from the waist down. The exhausts look badass, though I’m sure they won’t make production.

Wow that’s cool. Make It Kia!
For a Concept it looks pretty production ready.
