Kia to build first U.S. plant in Georgia

South Korea’s Kia said today it would build its first U.S. vehicle assembly plant in West Point, Georgia. The will be designed to produce as many as 300,000 vehicles a year, creating 2,500 local jobs. “Kia has entered an aggressive growth phase in the U.S.,” Kia Chief Executive Chung Eui-sun said. Kia said it expected its sales in North America to climb 15 percent to 350,000 units in 2006 and 800,000 by 2010.

Wow. This is really the last move I expected from Kia. I know that their company is growing and that their sales are increasing a lot, but I didn’t expect them to do this for another few years.

The question is, how much of the taxpayer’s money did Georgia agree to funnel into Hyundai’s coffers? I hope the deal is at least as much as they got in Alabama, or Dell got in NC.
