LA LIVE: 2020 Kia Niro EV

The electric Niro sounds like a spaceship -- seriously.

Kia continued its electric car offensive at the 2018 Los Angeles auto show. In addition to the 2020 Soul EV, the company released a battery-powered version of its Niro crossover.

The aptly-named Niro EV was previewed by a concept shown earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). On paper, the production model sounds a lot like the electric version of the Hyundai Kona. Electricity is stored in a 64-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and it travels to the front wheels through an electric motor rated at 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. Driving range checks in at up to 239 miles, a usable statistic that places the Niro near the top of its category.

Kia noted a fast charger provides 100 miles of range in half an hour, or an 80-percent charge in 75 minutes. Alternatively, using a level two (240-volt) charger yields a full charge in 9.5 hours. Regenerative braking technology helps top up the battery pack on-the-go, and Kia developed an innovative technology that automatically adjusts the level of regeneration based on the distance between the Niro and the vehicle in front of it.

Outside, the electric Niro looks a lot like the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models already on sale. The main differences are that it receives blue accents that hint at the battery-powered drivetrain, that some of the trim pieces are model-specific, and that it doesn't have a grille. You may not see that it's electric, but you'll certainly hear it. Kia programmed a pedestrian warning system that, to use the company's own words, sounds like a "speedy sci-fi craft." Consider yourself warned.

Inside, Kia added EV-specific upholstery and gives buyers the option of selecting blue and black door trim. The UVO infotainment system displayed on a seven-inch touchscreen provides information about the battery pack and real-time charging station updates. It also lets users pre-condition the cabin, schedule charging to take advantage of off-peak hours, and send a navigation destination from their phone to the car. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility both come standard.

Made in South Korea, the 2020 Kia Niro EV will go on sale in early 2019. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but Kia revealed the line-up will include two trim levels named EX and EX Premium, respectively.
