While the United Auto Workers union has so far failed to make good on its promise to organize at least one transplant automaker, union president Bob King is singing the praises of a deal that will see a new Maserati SUV built at a Detroit-area factory.
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne announced earlier this year that a Maserati SUV would be built at Chrysler’s Jefferson North Assembly Plant, with the luxury SUV expected to bow at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The Maserati SUV will be based on Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is also built at the Detroit plant.
“If we all work together, we can out-compete anybody in the world,” King said of Fiat’s decision to build the SUV in Detroit. “It’s a tremendous recognition of the great work that our members do.”
The Maserati SUV will be exported to other world markets, including Europe. King added that General Motors and Ford will also soon begin exporting U.S.-made vehicles.
