Koenigsegg readies Agera RS, Regera for US market

The RS boasts a lighter chassis than the R or S, along with 1160 horsepower.

Koenigsegg has confirmed that its Agera RS and upcoming Regera flagship will both be headed to the US market.

The Swedish automaker is starting with the RS, a track-focused yet still street-legal variant of the Agera platform. Only 25 examples will be built, most of which have already been pre-sold before the first showing. Four have already rolled off the assembly line, while another six are under construction. The seventh car is chassis #128, the first RS build that's fully homologated and road-legal for the US.

"The USA has not been a huge market for Koenigsegg in historical terms - the vast majority of our cars are sold to Europe, the Middle East and Asia - but the USA is a market we are dedicating more time to with the release of the Agera RS and the forthcoming Regera," the company says. "Gaining US homologation is a complex and expensive process that has to be re-done with each new model variant, but it's one we committed ourselves to some time ago."

Despite the RS itself being road-legal, owners will have to be light on the throttle to obey speed limits on public streets. It is up to 88 pounds lighter than its predecessors, the Agera R and S, while a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 boasts an insane 1160 horsepower (on regular fuel, the company notes). Around corners, drivers can expect to reach lateral acceleration levels up to 1.75G.

The Regera takes a more luxurious approach with memory-foam seats and a plush ride when the suspension is not set to sport modes. Its hybrid system features a unique direct-drive output from a twin-turbo V8, paired with electric motors for more than 1,500 ponies and 1,475 lb-ft of torque. Getting up to 249 mph is claimed to take just 20 seconds -- more than twice as quick as a Bugatti Veyron.

The first US-bound Agera RS will be delivered by mid-2016. A launch date for the Regera remains unclear.
